While it was definitely no Mercedes (and AMG nonetheless), my previous car was a 2 door sporty car. The next one was hands down going to be a 4 door sport sedan, hence how I ended up with a C55.
Maybe you want to consider a similar (but opposite) train of thought?

If this doesn't sell you on the E55, then you just have the SL55 in your heart.
-E55 is faster
-E55 handles better
-E55 is cheaper
-E55 has more space
-I never get a claustrophobic feeling in my E, like I do in SLs when the top is up.
If you read that and you still want the SL55, then there is nothing anyone can do for you, it's the car you just have to have, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I have both and am always a bit puzzled when they are compared... because aside from having the same engine... they don't compare.
My advice to people who I've talked to is not to ask what people think... the SL is always the sexier car, but it's much more limited in what it can do. You need to figure out what YOU need/want. My E55 is my year round business car along with the G. 4 doors, big trunk, comfortable, roomy, a real luxury sedan with brutal performance. The SL is for nice days... go for a drive and occasionally take it to the office. Not very utilitarian, but not supposed to be.
Ask yourself if the benefits the W211 has over an R230 in terms of practicality/etc are worth it to you... if not the choice is easy. You can't lose either way.

Go for the SL-55, they will never go out of style since it's probably one of the best looking car ever made!! With the right wheels and engine mods you will have a car for life!
W211 E55 is in my opinion a bit out of date by now A great car for sure that is great with the 4 seats, but they are getting old and there are to many of them that just look the same and have the same mods, SL55 is a more rare pick if you want to stand out
Good luuck!
PS: Marcus, your SL is sick fat!!

What are you talking about Abalone? Outdated and Old? LOL, speak for yourself dude. The W211 is classy and puts most cars today on the road to shame. The SL55 almost has the same production numbers also so I do not get your point of there being too many of them.

They're such different cars, both were designed during M-B's smooth/organic/timeless design approach, so both will age beautifully and gracefully. The cars share the same language, one is a more stately mixed with sporty and elegant Sedan, and one is a sexy sweeping sports coupe/vert.
I don't think either will look "out of date" for a long time (which is a completely subjective assumption anyway), and if one does, I think the other will as well, as again, the two cars are clearly related.
Also, just an FYI, not that this should matter, but the next gen SL is right around the corner.

Just like the W210 became old, the W211 has become old as new models are made, nothing more to it. I didn't mean specific productions numbers E55 Vs SL55, just that if you want a car that stands out more,SL55 is the way to go. Just look at this forum, which section is the biggest?

Seems people confuse whether a car literally being "old" dictates whether it looks old, which is subjective anyway. I don't think it can be argued that the W211 goes for a classic and timeless design approach, and executes it nicely.
Agreed about being more noticed in the SL. The SL's proportions will never get old, just pure sexy, but the design is technically as aged as the 211's, as well, the face of the early models share a similar-ish (headlights, older-style AMG bumper) look to the W203's, which were around in 2001.
On the aging subject, Coupes always seem to age more gracefully, as their proportions don't really go anywhere (sporty, narrow windows, swept-back windshield/design), and Sedans slowly go more and more for the Coupe look with every iteration (in most cases), which in most cases, age the older Sedans more, with their older-school more upright look.

2 very different car, one 4 doors sedan and the other is Coupe.
If you have kids, SL might not be too useful (IMO)
Trust me, when I get older and my kids are not around me, I will get the SL but too bad.... my daugther is only 14 months.

I went from an SL55 to my current E55 and here's my take.
Personally, I think the SL was the better car. The build quality, materials, ride and handling were all better than my E. The SL suspension was out of this world and made challenging on and off ramps a pleasure.
But, having only two seats and a small trunk was sometimes a problem. Also, I'm not a fan of convertibles even though I live in Florida so I never took the hard top off the car. The attention the SL got was more than I liked as well. Too many comments about how much it cost, etc.
My E55 on the other hand is faster than my SL was, has lots of room in the back seat and trunk, cost less, and nobody even notices another E class Benz. Just the way I like it.
All that being said, my next car will most likely be an SL63 because my life has changed and a two seat rag top suites my lifestyle now.
