Opinions on my intake.

So I understand that my method of moding my car may not be conventional but intrested to see what others have to say about my latest attempt to find some budget minded HP. This prodject has not been dynoed but what got it started was the last time I went to the dyno I made 1 pull at 456.4hp/522tq then pulled the airbox off with no cool down a put down 500.59hp/539.7tq with an open TB. Every thing is 3.5 and manderal bends.

I would be interested in hearing your impressions and maybe a back to back dyno with the stock airbox. I was thinking something similar. I don't care much about looks, and 2K for an airbox blows my mind ( renntech/Carbonio) pretty as they may be. Kudos if it works well.

I know! I would not even had mentioned if there haden't been 10 witness to it, I think some of the gain might have been in the computer adaption? but its just guess. I made 4 pulls total, one with a stock modified to fit an 82mm TB then no air box then 2 with meth. My car is still on a stock tune....

I think that setup works great on a dyno with fans blowing and an open hood, but once the hood shuts and your racing, the engine bay will retain more heat and you might lose a little power. I know when I'm at the drags, the metal beneath your cone filter gets hot enough to evaporate my ice water for a few minutes.

Edit: Just saw that you have a meth setup which will help with the IATs.

What kind of filter is that ?

How about if it was possible to make Y connection and plug another one on the driver's side ?? how well the improvement will be?

Is there any drawback of making the filter exposed like that? engine heat maybe? dirts? sand like in our countries over here in the gulf ??!!

the biggest draw back is under hood heat, My thinking is the flow will out weight the heat issue, its not like the stock set up is much better, yes its sealed but the boxs get heat soaked in no time, The filter is a amsoil. 3.5x 9 long I belive. what mods do you have on your car?

I have Brabus K8 package (Pulley + ECU), KLEEMANN headers, Brabus exhaust with 3 tips each side, Brabus anti lock differential, Fluid Motor Union Tune, K&N filters.

My 82mm is shipped today in your time, so, it will be here within 2 - 3 days along with the phenolic spacers (up and down).

I also have PLM HE and Johnson pump waiting the above parts to arrive so that I can install all of them together .

Last dyno number with my current mods was something like 500 whp.

sneakyneon: don't they make a heat shield that you could wrap around the intake filter to help prevent heat from creeping in?

Wow glad to see a different set up. What does your butt dyno say, do you feel a increase in power. In terms of sound is the s/c louder

Wow!

Props for trying something different! I am definitely curious about this intake as well, sound and butt-dyno-wise!

I'd like to see track number comparisons if possible. I had a somewhat similar setup on my car before but with a longer 3.5" pipe and cone filter closer to front of car. I think it lost mph on the back half but I'm not sure. I have a new intake as well but no way to determine the intakes effect alone since I turned the boost up at the same time and it isn't a simple swap back to the old intake.

Nick - i tried to run an HKS filter right on top of the throttle body and it was horrendous. under the hood temps get so high that what you see on a dyno with the hood open is not nearly indicative of what you'll get driving.

I for one don't think that your filter is in a good spot since I tried that and car was very very sluggish (sounded great tho). I keep forgetting that you run water meth which brings your IATs way down so that intake should work well for you in comination with W/M.

Just reread and noticed this. Be careful! You have a wideband in your car to watch AFR's?

So drove the car this morning, But dyno says its at least as good as stock and would have to say that its quite possible better. I"ll have some track info in a few weeks to fallow.

Now for the sound... Wow. insane whine, much like the SC cobra's. I also removed the sound deadner and that might be part of it, It was pretty tattered and beat up and think.

I too tried that filter on the TB and was less than impressed, I tried it at the track once and lost 2 mph from the stock one.
After my 20 min drive to work the filter was hot to the touch but the small metal connector was cool and the TB felt cool. I'll log some IAT this afternoon or tommarow.
