Bulbs/Lighting.... Issues, Summed up here vs. separate searches

Considering changing a few light bulbs on my rig.

1. Rear license plate light

http://www.carpartslights.com/pair-m...error-p-7.html
That link lists the type as 168/194.... and as a one-use-fits-all application (look at "applications" section !!)
However,
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...RG-Results.htm
lists the bulb type as 6418....
What about these two (the bulb types are not even mentioned) ??
https://mbworld.org/forums/exterior-...low-price.html
https://mbworld.org/forums/exterior-...placement.html
Are these license plate bulbs 5w or 10w ?
I would prefer to have the 5w so not running at a hotter temp.

2. Fog Lights
Sylvania lists as a 9006....
Don't wanna do an HID kit (ballasts, wiring) just a brighter bulb like 6000k.
What about buying from this website:
http://www.hidextra.com/
Selecting "HID bulbs" tab and 9006 bulb - however, that appears to be a true HID bulb, which I assume can't just plug into a regular halogen fog light?
PLUS --- I thought when the fog light breaks/burns out, the entire unit & assembly including glass and bulb needs to be replaced ?? And you don't open them up to replace bulbs like w head & tail-lights....

3. The light that stays on constantly (inner headlight - closest to grille) ?? Appears to serve no function.... Not a high beam as they are built into regular outer headlight. More like a daytime running lamp. What type bulb is this anyway ?? I removed the bulbs on my previous E55 and constantly had the error message - but I hated the halogen yellow looking, no purpose serving light next to the true Bi-Xenon low beam !!

Thanks in advance !!!

1. It's a 6418. Festoon type 5w bulb. Be careful, 99% of LED bulbs won't work.

2. 9006. No halogen bulb will match HID lighting.

3. commonly called the "city light". It's a 194/168 wedge type 5w bulb. You can replace these with LED wedge bulbs, but may get an error. There are ways to get rid of this error using resistors.

Yes, that is correct, you need to add resistors if you are not buying the actual LED replacement housings. You need to add a resistor to the positive terminal. That is it, and you can use any of those LEDS.
I just bought the Actual housing that includes 10 LEDs and resistors built in. Plug and play.

2. 9006. No halogen bulb will match HID lighting.

+1 by far,

3. commonly called the "city light". It's a 194/168 wedge type 5w bulb. You can replace these with LED wedge bulbs, but may get an error. There are ways to get rid of this error using resistors.
If you replace with just a simple LED with no resistors, it will blink, give an error, or stay on constantly even when car is off. I tried 8 different types of LED off ebay.
You either have to buy the $20 LED bulbs with built in resistors, or do what I did.
Grab the $1 LEDs of your choice off of Ebay, go to a surplus parts store and get a 2 or 3 watt 400 ohm resistor ( I paid $0.60 for two) and soder them into the positive wire coming from the harness. Fixed.

So you can spend $20 plus shipping, or $2 and 10 minutes of wiring and have the ability to constantly change your lights styles and colors whenver.

Hope this helps.

By the way, I just got jacked for all my new lights, ballasts and fogs this week.
so maybe it pays to stay stock and keep prying eyes off your mods.

I put some polarG 10w license plate lights in and was happy with them. But, after a month, one side went out. No big deal, I just bought another pair.

EXCEPT, now every bulb I tried (tried 3) to use as a replacement none work. Only on one side though. The right side still is working fine. It's Like the left plate light is not getting any current.

Anyone got an idea on this??

get a meter and check the nonworking side. may be worth while to pull the back trunk carpet off, not hard and look at the wiring.

The title says license plate and the summary says dome. Are they the same?

Yeah, I think the dome is the same size as the license plate. The color is pretty white too which I am happy about. most "white" led's I have seen tend to be too blue IMO.

Thx Vader I will score a pair of those.....

Does anyone have any more information about this ??

From my question number TWO on original post ?
I know that no halogen bulb will match HID lighting - as e1000 said - but this seems like a fair alternative for something I hardly use (fogs)

Thx

10w bulbs give off too much heat and have probably melted your housings. OEM bulb is 5w

Genuine HID is either D2R/S or D1R/S. The 9006 HID bulbs are "rebased" bulbs that use a HID type capsule with a base that will fit 9006. These are never OEM, but are sold as HID retrofit kits. Your fog light housing uses a standard 9006 halogen bulb, which is replaceable without changing the whole housing. You do not open them up to replace the bulbs. Same with the headlights and tail lights.

Whether you use a tinted halogen bulb or a 9006 HID bulb is completely up to you. Results will be different however, and you have to make the decision of what you want.

If you want to put 6000k in your fog lights you will want to do LED fog's which will be plug and play besides fitting the resistor, and they will also match your low beam HID's and LED city lights. Do not go with halogens or rebased HID bulbs because they will not look right and the "rebases" have been known to blow up because of inferior parts.

I bought the 68-smd LED fog lights and they are great!

how's the light output? By my rough estimates these should throw very little light and are just for looks.

E55 then E63, now back to an E55
Just curious, on my E63 when I was going to replace the fog light because a rock broke it - the only ones I could find for order is the entire assembly (housing with glass, bulb inside, mounting tabs on side, female plug for wire to insert.) It was one piece and after removing that side's lower mesh grille, I popped out a few screws and unplugged connector and the old light was then in my hand. I am 100% positive the CLS 55 fog light acts in the same way!
For that reason, I am curious as to why the bulb removes from E55 fog and the external housing is re-usable.....? Thx

If your going to spend money on new bulbs then you should just get a slim ballast 9006 hid kit. I have 3000k (yellow) and they are hella bright LED 9006 bulbs would be more cosmetic then for light output next to hid.

Hi. I got mine from another company but they are all the same. They either come from Taiwan or China. That price is extremely good! I got mine for $25 with shipping from my supplier, so yeah it is a good deal.

You are right that HID's put out more light if that is what you are truly looking for Vader, but compared to stock I would say they put out more light and they will match perfectly your other bulbs.

My car with 6000k led's and hid's.
