Do people generally know what these things have in them?

I bought my E55 06 about a year ago paid $33K include ext. warranty.
I wish I am like one of your guys can pay $100K or even $80K for a new car. I put the most of my money in my house and my kids. I reason I bought the 55 is NOT to race, I bought it bacause I come to visite this forum so often and made me sold my E500 and get the 55. I hope this forum is still the same and people still get respect even have different opinions.

Just for the record, I wasn't trying to be pretentious. I was being realistic albeit with a little bit of sarcasm. But the fact is that these cars are getting somewhat long in the tooth. Don't get me wrong, they are great for what they are. But they aren't the fastest or best thing on the road, especially as new models of performance cars keep constantly upping the ante.
fwiw, I bought a new 2009 W211 E63 last year. Yeah, it's depreciated faster than a rock in water although I knew that going into it (I did get 29k off MSRP which was why I decided to buy it in the first place.) And in a few years, used W212 E63s will be on the market for cheap, too, as the new TTs arrive.
And when that happens, my old W211 E63 will be sold cheap to somebody who couldn't afford a new one or maybe never had a fast and expensive car before, and they'll think it's the cat's meow. That's what really makes this car sell on the used market: a big bang for the buck. New owners pop up on these boards almost daily.
But these cars do get old fast. It used to be not so much, but technology and manufacturing has really sped up model year differences. The first E63 was just introduced in 2007. Now we're all waiting for the new TTs arrive. That's crazy when you think about it. Talk about planned obsolescence.
The truth is that this is happening with most mass produced performance higher end cars. They start to spill into the used market for cheap and then you get more "me faster than you" threads and a whole shift in type of ownership. And that's what causes friction.
It's the same with 997s, M6s, M5s, etc., etc..
No biggie, but just pointing it out.

^WORD - And even though these cars are getting on in age, they still rock. Being one body style from current is not a big deal to me. For some it is, and they pay the price for "new".. The Gallardo in the parking lot is an '05, however with 24/k miles, I would say it is still pretty nice. Ill race him later this week. I will make sure to have cameras on all four corners, and elecronic monitoring of all systems. In fact, since this is one of my friends, Ill hook a cable to his car too. Maybe I can get someone to run along to make sure the cable does't drag the ground...

fwiw, my Porsche is now 14 years old and I'm holding on to it (I had a newer 997 but went back to a 993.) It's a classic. But it's not that fast by current standards. And I bought my 2009 E63 last year knowing the new style W212 was here (I preferred the W211 body style.)
Body style and design is another issue all together. I really like the style of the 1960's Ferraris, but they aren't honestly that fun to drive (nor fast by today's standards.) I like a lot of older cars, but their functionality and driving enjoyment are becoming limited as the years go by.
Manufacturers move out new technology (motors, trannys, etc.) really quickly these days. The minute you get something, there's something more advanced already coming around the corner. It's almost as bad as computers and digital cameras, etc..
Get what works for you. But there's always something better and faster. Yeah, these cars rock but let's not get complacent about it and try to convince ourselves they're the greatest cars on the road. Definitely a big bang for the buck on the used market, but they aren't supercars nor are they collectibles. AMG is now the boutique division of Daimler AG. It's not like the old days of the original Hammer, etc.. There's an AMG version of everything MB now builds.
Where I live, I see tons of cars way faster and more pricey than what I drive. Nobody pays attention to my car. And I like it for that reason.

Agreed with all information in the previous post except: The AMG still has a hand built engine, are not that common in comparsion and come from the factory with nealy 500HP. Its better than my Suburban
Oh, and per the Internet, all E55's are faster than rickers 600. I did a search
PS- I still like the E30 M3.. Its slow but.. has a coolness factor.

Mercedes S55 AMG
I have a 2001 S55 - NA 55 Engine and AMG monoblock rims. I love it, it's the perfect "classic" big AMG car, along with the first E55's and C36. Not as fast as the newer kompressor that came after it, but still a lot of power to play with.
I love the look, I want to always keep it even if I get newer cars. It's a timeless design imho. The W220 and W211 aren't too far apart design wise either.

I think it is funny if anyone has seen that ford commercial where all they talk about are the ventilated seats as though that is some type of new technology when we have had that for seven years! It just tells me how Mercedes is the leader in innovation and how we are lucky to have had these features for such a long time before they got filtered down to these pieces of crap that GM, Ford, and other manufacturers produce.

Ricker,
your wit was evident in post number one... Your peanut gallery only pales in comparison to what you have provided thus far.
I’ve noticed you have probably moved on to harassing other posters, but glad you came back to say hi.
I was wondering if you could help me since I am new here:
How do I get my insignificant mods in BOLD and RED at the bottom of my posts?
PS- Are all those oil spots from your hot rod or your hair?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for VIC, I do not need to tell you the power of google.. First hit:
www.rickers600isslowerthanalle55s.org
I'm surprised you missed it, but (seriously) the info you provide is truly appreciated. I see you add a lot of value here. Rickers, well, he provides endless hours of amusement…
...and to answer Gonads question: Goofier!

To stay on track...adding your rear wing to your mod list can be done, just go to your settings.

I keep coming up with bigger and better insults. I'll add the wing now- Thanks:
opps- Forgot Mod List:
WING
ps- Ricker and I are buddies now, however if you want to take his place, that would be fine.

Since this thread will likely be closed soon, Ill some it up for the new readers:
Q. Do people generally know what these things have in them?
A. No, most do not
Thanks guys for helping out a (happy) new E55 owner.

I love this place.
BTW, until Ricker posts a time slip, I'm taking credit for the quickest 1/4 mile in an SL600 on MBWorld. OH SNAP!
Off topic:
Sean, still love the TCU tune? I'm gonna let you log some miles before I take the plunge.
