E63 OR CLS55

Got a dilema, has any one owned both, i have one dealer he has e63 58k Miles for $39k that i discussed yesterday, and 2006 cls55 with 32k miles for $42k, but seems to be base model, no keyless, or rear shade.

is the CLS as good ?

I think in this case it's personal preference. Obviously you have the different trannies and motors, but the chassis is the same. Mostly just styling and interior layout. Can't go wrong with either of these cars IMO..!! Maybe not these two exact ones, but either of these models...

so for the 3k differece, would you choose the cls or e, i think me and you spoke yesterday, i am trying to get into a amg asap, trouble is they are rare as chickens teeth, as i said yesterday the e63 sounds fantastic, but its 58k miles bother me, even though its quite well equipped.

I would still pick the E, but mostly because it's a 63. CLS' do seem to hold value a bit longer than E's so that's another consideration. I don't think I would pay more for an 06 CLS 55 than and 07 E63. The miles on the CLS are good though. It's pretty much a toss up, but I would definitely get a warranty on either one, so you can replace your IC pump

the cls and e are basically the same but the looks go to the cls,the engines are totaly different(supercharged vs n/a) the power on the komp.is NOW the 63 takes a while to wake up.different personality.

Both are great cars.... the CLS has the looks, but the E is a little lighter and is a bit more agile.

If you plan on modding, then you have to go with the 55k engine because the 63 will cost you a fortune to mod

If you're a tall guy over 6' 2" or so you'll find a lot more head room in the E. Not to mention the backseat of the CLS is real tight too.

That's the price you pay for that great CLS look.

I don't get the CLS unless you just love the looks. It costs more, has less room in the back and is around 200lbs heavier. The E63 for me is a step up in general because Mercedes redesigned certain aspects of the car but the torque from a 55 is hard to beat.

If you like the looks of the CLS I say go for it. The miles on the E63 are a bit high. Maybe wait for one with less miles and an extended warranty?

Or forget them both and get this one!

real nice, but have 2 kids, one in baby seat, don't think it will work.

thanks for the info, will keep looking, as you say the miles are a little high, though it has plenty of service history, not sure if thats good or bad,a lot of parts replaced.

Yeah, I've had that debate too. Does a large service history mean good or bad things? Who knows for sure. I would definitely hold out for one with a warranty. Maybe even your preferred color combo and/or some mods if you're not in a hurry.

I wish I would have taken my own adivce. I'm happy with my car but I could have came out further ahead in retrospect.

If you can be patient (I know, easier said than done) there are some sweet rides out there. A guy over on the BenzWorld W211 AMG board just showed pics of a "pristine" 2006 E55, 27K miles, Certified, that he picked up in the low $40's. So they are out there. But be prepared to travel. If you don't find a CPO, you can have a "buyers inspection" done at most MB dealerships for $200-$250 before you jump on the plane. Since it's your money, any legitimate seller should be fine with taking it to a dealer. Then if it still looks like what you want you can take a quick trip. It's worth waiting to get exactly what you want.

Good luck!!

the CLS in my opinion has a useless back seat. If you were a single guy and weren't using it I would say go with the CLS. However, you are def going to have more usable space in the E. I also looked at the CLS b/c I think it looks great from the outside but it's essentially a two seater.

The CLS is definitely a nice looking car, even though its a 4 door, it's marketed as a coupe. That center console divides the back seat, so seat space is used up. Two adults could fit, but headroom is an issue. The CLS as a leather covered dash, has wider rear tires, 285 as compared to the E63 265. I believe the E has larger trunk space. The CLS 55 engine has more issues then the 63. Supercharger clutch, IC pump. Both cars have airmatic suspensions, and they have their little problems. It's really a owners choice, I prefer the E63, due to it's profile and revised front and rear end. IMHO the E looks better, some will say no. But it's my opinion. The E has the latest engine, although the 55 packs more torque, the E has the HP advantage. 55 has 8 piston calipers, the E 6 piston. One benefit to the E is no SBC, which can be a pain, when changing rotors or pads. And must be disabled, or you lose an apendage..LOL You really can't go wrong with either car IMHO. AMG stays for quality and power. When your driving an AMG you either get respect, or the other car gets spanked. I would look for a lower mileage E63 though, and by all means get yourself a warranty with either car. Warranty is the bible for an AMG, because when they break, they break your wallet. And that is my .02 cents

thanks very useful information, I appreciate your imput, I was going to see the car today, but i think the general consensus is buy lower mileage, even though it seems to have good service records, and well equipped.

I was in the exact same situation (yet ended up getting a New E350 ).

Between the CLS55 and E63, I probably would have gone E hands down, had I not already owned a W211 before (just felt like I wanted to try a new body style). I like the N/A 6.3 motor, I like the slightly newer tech it comes with (VS the 55's), I like the added Reliability, and I like the sound.

Basically, like I've always said, the E's are much better actual functioning cars than the CLS's (even are much more aerodynamic, surprisingly enough), so to even consider the CLS, the exterior/interior have to really blow the E's out of the water to you, to put it at a level where you wouldn't even consider a more practical E.

I drove a CLS55 I was gonna buy, and I was in love with it, and I always hated CLS styling before. I like the stately Sedan look of the E, it's more my style, but the CLS is so voluptuous and dynamic, it really saddened me when my W211 would sit next to one, it just made it look like a "Taxi-Cab", per-se. Still, I don't know which out of the W211 E63 and CLS body I'd say I think is nicer, I like both.

Either way, the mileage on the E63 is way too high, that alone would push me into the CLS. I will say, the CLS55 is more of a straight up hot-rod than the E, looks, blown V8 feel, etc.

if you have passengers sitting in the back seat, and they want to see out the back windows, dont get the cls

my pops drives a cls and i drive the e, his is not amg ... he gets all the looks and i got all the power

if your single or have young kids go with the cls ... if your married and want to use the back seat go with the e

cls is sexxxy

i think you should go with the cls

+1... My brother has a CLS, the back seat of a CL is more comfortable.

I would vote for the CLS55 just for the rarity of it and the mod friendly of the 55K engine. I would prefer the look of the E63, but don't care for the 63 engine, and the E63 don't come with the dynamic seats (big turn off).

So in short, buy to keep forever, CLS55. Otherwise, E63.

Some excellent advice in this thread.

I also chose the E class for its functionality. It's fun to take 3-4 friends out to dinner in a 507hp sedan. Can't do that in a CLS unless they're really tiny, really short friends LOL.

I *love* the CLS body lines and interior. I love the E's style and love its functionality even more.

I'm also a fan of the N/A 63 engine, but that's just me apparently. Most on this board enjoy modding (can't blame 'em) and the 55K is a very mod friendly engine. That alone could help make your decision.
