Bought a W211 E55 in 2004 and modded it in 2005 (Pulley, Tune, Headers, Exhaust) long before there were better mods. The car was amazing, in a straight line. I dumped it in 2007.
I got a W212 E63 last year and the car is worlds apart in handling, steering, and stock exhaust note ... and yes its slower probably stock versus stock (close and I cant remember a what a stock E55 felt like) but the NA's instant gratification is worth it to me.
There is always something faster in a sedan or sports car so for me the W212 serves its daily purpose in getting me to and from I need to go. Yes its 6 years younger but I actually paid less than I did for my 2004. 20k dealer factory money plus a giving dealer allowed me to steal it.
Price aside and going back to my feelings in 2004; I was amazed to even own a sedan with over 500 lb ft of torque and an underrated 469 hp. Even in today's standards its very impressive. Besides my E39 M5 its the car I miss the most that I owned.
But I like the W212 looks better, steering, steel springs up front (hated pigmatic) and normal aspiration has its benefits. Plus the GTR and 997TT PDK serve my speed needs.

I bought my E55K 06 about 2.5 years ago, paid around $35K with Chrysler Ext warranty. Its 06 all equipped, Parking sensor, Pano-roof, Keyless go, heat/cold seat, dynamic seat, rear sun-shade.... 1 owner California car. For the same equipment lets say at that time for E63 was around $55K+
E63 is much better looking car but for 1 year younger with $15K different no way. Plus, 07 was the first year of E63, couldn't try it so decided 06 E55.
Its also all depends on your budget.

I looked hard at both an '06 e55 and the '07 e63 which I bought. Pretty close call.
In the end, I liked the updated look of the e63, and think the sound of the NA engine is pure sex. I like the smoother ride - I dont race around much - just a powerful cruise along the expressway (with the ability to flick the paddle shifter once or twice when in town to bring the engine to a roar).
Both great cars. Just depends if you want more instant grunt (e55) or a bit more smooth sophistication (e63).

It's the same: HDD instead of DVD, VC, Music Register, SD card reading (I keep SD cards filled with music in the car), actual street number input, fully integrated BT/phone, ZAGAT ratings with addresses and phone numbers (find a restaurant, call them up and make a reservation and all hands-free), POI and map download from your iPhone (if you have TeleAid or MBrace), you can turn off the display screen completely and still use the system off the IC (which is nice at night), etc..
It's really what an integrated media/Nav system should be, although still not up to Japanese (or the latest iDrive) standards. But it makes you scratch your head over the previous COMAND systems and say WTF were they thinking.
Also you can play DVD-A which will make full use of the Logic 7 surround sound and all the speakers (hard to find them, but check Amazon.) The sound is way, way better than CDs (and MP3s, of course.)
With the W212 system you can no longer put in addresses while moving (have to use VC instead), so the 2009 has one up over the W212. But the W212 has the screen in the right place (up on the dash in better eyesight) and the rotary wheel input.
It's really what an integrated media/Nav system should be, although still not up to Japanese (or the latest iDrive) standards. But it makes you scratch your head over the previous COMAND systems and say WTF were they thinking.

Both are great cars, with their differences. E63 has more power, but the E55 has more torque. Decisions.... decisions. Well the gods have spoken, here is my choose.

Yeah, you just need to install the Media Interface Plus black box (see pdf attached.) Works on 2009 and later COMAND. And if you have a Blackberry you can read and reply to email (no iPhone email support for some reason )

I looked at the E55, C63, and E63 P30 before I bought. The 2008 C63 was ok, but too small for my tastes. Some of the E55s were getting too old and no CPO offering. The exhaust note was awesome. I think the E55 would be great if you mod the cars, but stock E63 versus stock E55...I'd go with the E63. I specifically wanted the P30 option on the car to stiffen the suspension. It does a good job. I came from a long line of Corvettes. The P30 handles it's business quite well for a 4200 sedan.
So I guess in summary if you want to mod the car go E55. If you want a car that will run low 12s stock and handles well seek out a used P30. The LSD really does a good job on the P30. Guess it depends on what you are going to use the car for. If you're looking for a drag car save your bucks and get a Mustang GT. You won't have an Airmatic suspension going boom.
