@ KLR CLS. I just noticed you have a ton of great mods and I'm wondering why you're using the PLM shorty headers on your beast? That's like tuning your car with 87 octane.
If you were to run real LT's, use your stock resonator and stock muffles you would be able to take full advantage of all your other mods and the sound would be very close to stock until you actually floored it. I have LT's, no cats, no resonator and stock CLS muffles and my car sounds very close to stock until I get aggressive, then all hell breaks lose!!

Bottom line...cats choke the car. I definitely feel a loss throughout the curve after installing cats again. She just doesn't pull as hard as before. ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
I'm sure there is hp to be found after deleting cats, if you choose to do so...

How would adding an x-pipe in place of the resonator add more power?

The secondary cats already have a crossover built in, so not sure why you would add an x pipe in place of the resonator

it smooths the exhaust pulses between the banks and creates better scavenging of exhaust airflow
while I haven't seen any conclusive data from the E55s - I found this article a few months back where they tested straight vs H-pipe vs x-pipe and the setup with x-pipe made more power than the other two...

I'm sure someone has to have tested this on the 55s

One question: how did you have your "exhaust tips adjusted" because mine are buzzing on the CF rear diffuser and it's driving me nuts. Did they cut and reweld the tips or lower the entire muffler?

try shimming your muffler mounting points with some washers. It could help.
On another note: A lot of wacky tip action (trying to say that with a straight face) can be caused by using flex joints. So for the guys building an exhaust system for their car, maybe stay away from a flex joint. Over time the flex joints loosen up causing the exhaust to sag. Resulting in the tips deflecting, hitting things, that sort of thing. It's OK to use 1 flex joint, but don't use two. Just thought I'd toss that out there.

Thanks. Shimming the mufflers might just do the trick. I think I just need to drop the muffs about 1/4"

at a 1/4" you may need longer bolts. You are going to want some bite on those threads. last thing you want is to be doing is dragging your rear section down the street.

[QUOTE=MBH motorsports;4160019]IMO The CLS55 has the meanest sounding muffler out of all the AMG's. In the videos below all cars are fitted with MBH long tube headers, primary cat deletes, resonator deletes. Secondary cats are intact in all 3 cars. The SL55 (mine) and the CLS55 (My brothers) have only headers for mods. This E55 makes 580whp on 100oct. The E55 is noticeable much quieter than both the SL and CLS.
I disagree. Have any of you heard a stock SLK55? They had one at the AMG Challenge a couple of years ago. To me, that was the best sounding stock system. This was right when 63s were coming out.

I found a local exhaust shop to remove my resonator and secondary cats and I'll be getting this done tomorrow. I also have the Magnaflow x-pipe ready to go in. I have a question about the x-pipe placement. All of the threads I searched through say to place the x-pipe as far forward/closest to engine as possible to reduce drone both other threads said to make sure the x-pipe is placed where the secondary cats were. I'm a bit confused about the x-pipe placement now. Should I place it where the resonator was or farther back where the secondaries are? I definitely want to avoid any drone at cruise, thanks.

Place it as close to the engine as possible. In the E55's case that's where the secondary cats are.

OK. I thought if I was also ditching the resonator the x-pipe could be placed farther forward. I'll have him install it where the secondaries are, thanks.

Sweet brotha, I can't wait to get this done tomorrow and go hunting with the new nasty growl
Can you send or repost the pic of your setup, the link is dead. I want to print it out and take it down to the exhaust shop so he has a reference.

Got the exact same setup done today as AKnight55 and I was disappointed as I was expecting more growl. It sounds better but nowhere near what I was expecting chopping off that heavy resonator and secondary cats. At least I saved some weight and it sounds a little meaner...will have to look into different mufflers next.
