What is happening when the new 5.5TT shifts? *vid*

BELIEVE ME, not complaining with our current slushy machines.

Just that I have now seen 2 videos of the new TT AMG working out and when it is shifting through the gears it makes this violent outburst of exhaust during gear shifts. Is it the wastegate opening slightly and blasting through the exhaust?

So much to learn on turbos!! I have been a SC guy for so many years now.

Thanks for any input and just listen to those lightning shifts.

First vid.....listen after 43 secs as he is pulling away. Also listen at 56 secs, sounds like an exhaust leak or something. Weird

2nd vid......watch the E pull away after 30 secs.

hard to tell but to me it just sounds like the engine pitch is changing faster than we're used to because our trannys shift so slow compared to these.

...but i'm just listening to aux speakers attatched to my computer where i'm sure you're professionally disecting each sound bite!!!

I think the noise is more from the tranny down-shift than the wastegates. The wastegates noise is only when you lift off the throttle, not during deceleration.

Thats the CLS 63 AMG with a 55 engine..........

Why is MB/AMG marketing not changing the numeric designation to 55TT or TT55?
63 engine is on the way out.

And oh ya, waste gates and or some fancy electronic boost controller.

It may also be ignition cut to allow the mct to shift without torques destroying the tranny. Anybody hear an SLS under load like that?

Almost all Dual Clutch trannies sound like this when shifting. DSG, DCT, R35 GTR Dual clutch..they all gurgle a bit in between shifts.

I'm not excited. I own an SC car (E55) and a TT car (996TT) and I prefer the SC by a HUGE margin. Smoother, better low-end torque, just better all around.

not really.

wastegates open at the point when the prescribed boost level (be it by ebc or ecu) is hit. This occurs when you're on the gas.

You're thinking of the bypass/blow off valve, which releases or bypasses the air that has hit the now-closed throttle body and is on its way back to the turbo in an attempt to prevent compressor stall.

It prevents turbo surge and works the same way on a supercharged engine. The sudden closure of the throttle body creates a shockwave that bounces off the throttle plate and heads in reverse of the normal air flow. A blow-off valve releases the pressure so that shockwave never makes it back to the turbo or compressor blades.

The shock can be so severe that it will stop the turbo blades from spinning and can even make them spin in reverse. The damage it can do to the engine and turbo/supercharger is no joke. An engine also runs much better when the turbo/supercharger can spin freely so it can run like a normally aspirated engine under vacuum conditions.

Yeah, you can hear it in the E63 with MCT. Sounds like it's farting.

with the amg pack The new tt motor makes over 800nm from around 2000rpm and 900nm from 2500rpm to 3750rpm so i think this motor will have alot more low end torque and power. it will make the 996 engine and e55 engine feel laggy lol

Daaayum that new engine & snappy transmission sounds GOOOOD!

I agree, this new TT 5.5 is likely going to make both the 6.3NA and 5.5SC engines feel slow and laggy.

So SLS Roadster with the 5.5tt...now I just need to wait about 10 years until I can find a gently used one :-)
