Sathinas is right, if you do not have a puck inside your center console, then your car isn't equipped for bluetooth. But don't worry, there are numerous products on the market to upgrade your car with bluetooth.
I have used these devices and they work great. For older vehicles not equipped with bluetooth, try this link. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7BBTkwCjCECjCE

The UHI connector is on the rear inside back wall of the center console. It is a very small rectangular connector. If you have that your car is "phone ready". You can find new OEM MB pucks on eBay in the $200-$250 range. They are $400 something at the dealer. The set up is a no brainer, basically plug and play. Sound is great. Stay away from those other products.
If you don't have the UHI connector then it gets complicated and expensive.

On a side note, on the navi there is a section that says phone, I tried selecting it but it says "phone not connected/available" or something like that.

It will show that until the B/T is installed and your phone is paired.

Nasty, here is what works on an 04, the 05 uses a newer, MHI puck.
This thread has some pics to help you find your connector in the console.

You would see it if you had it. It looks like a black square 1inch by 1 inch in the back of your center console. Behind the cup holders where that void of space is.

So.....what would it take to add factory bluetooth phone connectivity to an E55 that did not come with the hands-free phone option?

The phone option in your car was really rare in 2005 since it was expensive. You need to have it installed Approx $1500 at a dealer for parts and installation. Easier way to tell is hit the TEL button. If it says "insert phone" you have a kit, if not it says "no phone.."

Here is the BT puck installed in place... The blue led's confirm it's paired with a phone, otherwise the leds will be off...
