E55 Brakes: Found a convenient/cheaper source
Ambrake Co (Akebono) is local to me here in KY so i decided to call them to see if they have a local distributor. Got to found out that CarQuest parts store carries the Akebono Pads and they can order the OEM rotors for you too.
Akebono Euro983 = CarQuest's PCD-983 @ $139/set
MBZ OEM rotors @ $99/each
MBZ pad sensors @ $6.43 each.
So check with your local CQ store and save not only on time but on shipping too.

Damn a month too late for me. For those rotor prices I would have just gone ahead and changed my rotors when i switched to Akebonos. very very attractive pricing. Thanks for sharing.

all, I keep seeing these prices for under 100 bucks for the rotors...I pay cost for parts at merc and the cheapest they come at the dealership is about 130. All the ones I looked up online under 100 bucks are not drilled rotors....can someone post me up a part number? I have a carquest right next to my house. Its just hard for me to believe I am paying cost at the dealership(buddy ones a shop with a merc account) and the parts store are selling the same rotors for cheaper???

Is it OK to just replace the pads and sensors or do you all recommend putting in new rotors as well? My rotors seem to be find but at these prices it's almost a, "Why not do this if it help."
Just not sure if this helps/hurts?
Thanks.

Front:
36mm new. Wear limit is 34mm. Service at 34.6mm.
Rear:
26mm new. Wear limit is 24mm. Service at 24.6mm.
I am at 36,000 miles myself and my rotors feels fine too. However i am pretty sure i will need rotors in next 2-4,000 miles so why not just go ahead and have a new set all around. If you didn't do it then you might have to pay the labor again.
If i was you,i would get the rotors measured and if they are 35 mm or higher then you could possibly wait but anything lower, replace.
Hope this helps in making up your mind.

ALSO, I am not sure waht the markup on parts are but I get them at 30% off the list price. Maybe the markup is more but I can;t see it being to much higher....then again, who knows...lol.
I went and got the first quote from the dealership with just providing the year make and modle of the car and they quoted $93(my price) per rotor. Then when I gave them the VIN number the price jumped up dramatically. Was there and upgrade for the brakes available in 03' or did the chuckle-head mess up on the original quote?

Living in Honolulu certain times each year has hit my wallet hard since alot of shipping deals and discounts from various sites or stores do not apply to Hawaii and Alaska. Taking Hawaii out of the equation, however, I had shopped around alot for rotors in the past and have found that you can be misquoted with the E class "AMG Performance Package" rotors instead of the cross-drilled E55 rotors, and I believe the price difference was around $40 a piece with the E55's being more expensive. Another thing I factored in was cost of shipping and applicable taxes which for a 75 pound shipment (pair), can make a big difference in final cost.

How do the Ake's compare in price vs. stock?

You aren't paying "cost". All you're getting is your buddy's discount on the parts since he has a resale account through the dealer. It's likely 15-20% off MB FULL RETAIL. Dealer cost is a completely different situation. Besides, the prices that these guys are referring to are for aftermarket rotors not MB rotors.

And there's the rub. MB publishes "suggested" list or retail prices for its parts. Dealers are free to add their own mark-up to the quoted "retail" price, and most do. Then the unsuspecting customers goes in to buy parts from the dealer and they say we'll give you 15% or 20% or 25%, or even 30% off the "list" price (which they've likely marked up by the discount they've offered you). You end up not really getting any discount at all, even though your receipt shows the bogus "list" price, and the huge discount you thought you got.
RBM of Atlanta, Atlanta's oldest and largest MB dealer, engages in this bogus practice, and it's why I quit buying parts from them. Most MB customers aren't car enthusiasts as we understand the term, and don't know they're being scammed.
Don't be surprised if your MB dealer is doing the same thing.

With Carquest, the parts are local... No S&H
