Potential 04 E55 purchase but car feels really slow?
Hi all,
My brother has a Black with Merlot 04 E55 and got me wanting one now. He went and test drove an 04 yesterday for me and mentioned that the car feels really slow compared to his.
The vehicle has about 36k miles on it and it has an interesting service dealing with mainly the battery dying quite often, resulting into multiple replacements over it's lifetime. BTW, the car just got two new batteries replaced a couple of hours before the test drive.
I've searched on the forums and found a few threads mentioning such symptoms so I'll look into that later. The vehicle will most likely also get Certified status protecting me for one year or 100k miles.
What I'd like to ask is aside from resetting the ECU(done at the dealership) and the car still feeling slow, what other things should I consider checking as to why the vehicle feels that much slower that my brother's car.
I know all cars are different obviously, but I think they should be somewhat close in comparison correct? Who knows if this is attributed to other things such as the crank position sensor (I had power issues with one of my previous cars that instantly woke up with a new sensor) or if it needs an oil change, etc...
The car itself is immaculate in condition, my only concern is the health of the motor.
Hopefully someone can throw ideas out there.

If you have any understanding of how complex the electrical system is on thees cars, you would never consider purchasing one with history in this regard.
If the car is slow, and you know for a fact the S/C is not shutting off, what more do you need to know?

Long as she is CPO I say yes. Buying her with questions off the bat is scary.
+1 on Yacht. FULL information needed to see what she may have been serviced for. Most dealers will pull it for you. Cool ones that is. (you need VIN)

The car will be CPO'd and would be getting it at a very resonable price considering the history. It would be a gamble with this car given the history, but all used cars are always a gamble.
I'm just trying to pick owners' brains about what could be other things to look for. I will be looking at getting the service history on the car to see what electrical symptoms it was having resulting in servicing of the system itself.
Thanks all for your continued input.

Check and see if they ever replaced the Battery Control Module somewhere down the line. If they have swapped that out and she is still throwing batteries, that is pretty scary.
I am assuming (dangerous word) that they keep checking the ole alternator and it must test okay.
Keep us updated.

I am the person who went to drive this car. The car itself is beautiful and drives like its brand new. It was pretty hot here in fl yesterday and i kept getting on and off the throttle and the car just felt real slow. I rolled it at 30mph with traction off and no wheel spin, second 50 rolling and it just didnt have the jolt that my car does. i dont think the pump is hurting the car because the blower never shut off on me. The cars history has some electrical issues Battery electrical fault like 7 times , control unit central gateway a couple of times. im not sure if the electrical issues is making the car feel so slow, dirty airfilters that have prob never been replaced?? i dont know.
Thanks
Thanks

It could be ignition, intake, exhaust, fueling, or even a transmission problem. If you don't have a way to data log or dyno this puppy and you're certain it's not the s/c or ic pump, you might be better off passing on this one.

LOL. It seems like you think these cars are ticking bombs even though there has not been a case reported of this supposed threat. I think you need to do more investigating and not let your excitement cloud your judgment if you want good advice. There is no worse of a feeling than buying a car and then having major issues which it seems the car might have had in its past. Either way good luck and let us know what you find out.

hmmm, just because it has not happened yet does not mean it will or wont. If and when it does I want to think I made every effort to raise the red flag with other owners, MB USA and NHTSA.
If and when it does happen the world will change for all us 03-06 E55 owners.
Another E55 owner and member on this forum has his car in Schumi MB in Phoenix right now with the exact same problem. Gas pouring out from under the car and it gave no prior notice. That tow truck driver didnt even want to touch that car it was so bad.
So is my case isolated? Are my actions over the top?
Time will tell.
BTW, I like your sig images.
