E63 privare sale opinions
Guys,
I'm considering a '08 E63. PII, pano, 23k miles, black/black, Pirelli P Zero Nero's
(2k miles on tires)
Here's my reluctance. The car was bought in Aug '07, so there's only a yr left on the factory warranty and obviously, as a private sale, no cpo (also no extended warranty).
A cpo w/16k miles, same equipment, just sold at a dlr @ $50k and that took awhile.
So what's the right price for the car I'm considering ?

I would try to get it for somewhere in the low $40's and then spend $3-4K on a MB dealer extended warranty. The dealers usually expect to get a $4000 premium for a CPO. That only gives you one additional year of warranty (plus some maintenence items they take care of). I'd rather spend the $3-4K on several more years and many thousands of miles of warranty protection with little or no deductible. Just my $.02.

Don't buy an AMG car without an extended warranty.
Believe it or not Mercedes warranty (both the additional year included in the CPO, and the options you can buy to extend that) is really not a bad deal anymore.
Given that Chrysler is out of the picture things are getting VERY expensive. And then there is the danger that a secondary warranty company might not cover things like Airmatic and electronics.
BTW...wish I took my own advice....currently warranty free![Frown](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Good luck.

I may be incorrect, but....
The only way you can get a Mercedes covered with an extended warranty from the manufacturer is:
1. Be the original owner and still within the original warranty.
2. Buy a CPO car and extend it at the time of purchase.
CPO cars are expensive for a reason....lol.

This maybe a long shot but worth a try: if the guy you are buying the car from happens to be the original owner then he can extend the original factory warranty for you and then transfer it to you as he sells the car. However, because there is always the risk that you may not buy the car after he pays for the extended warranty, it may be very difficult to find someone willing to do that.

Thanks guys ! All good info and advice.
The seller also still has a lien on the car which is likely more than the car is worth.
I've found it difficult, in the past, to negotiate a realistic price with a private seller that doesn't have a clear title.
He's asking $54k so I doubt he'll come down to the low 40's. Here's the car (meant to put this in the op) : Click

What's the market like on The 09's?
A lot of those guys got HUGE rebates. So you might find a real nice bargain...plus an extra year of warranty.

The market doesn't seem to reflect the rebates, at least not from dealers.
There's even an Audi dlr nearby still tryng to get 70k for a 22k mile car and no cpo !:click

I actually checked the 09's first because of the change in the command.

I'm one of those who got the huge discount on a new 2009 last summer. I was playing around with getting something else a month or so ago and was offered $58k as a straight buy from a dealer. The title is free and clear. I'm guessing the dealer was thinking on turning it around for $60k hopefully on a quick sale.
I'm not sure if those last year discounts are being reflected in retail pricing. The fact is, you can't buy them new anymore with those discounts. So it becomes kind of irrelevant what they cost new a year ago. It's all about what the market will bear and what someone will pay.
You do have the economy in your favor. If fewer people are buying then the pricing will keep dropping. But some dealers are stuck with what they already paid for them and it might be hard for them to be ready to take any losses.

You're right of course.
Plus, in my case a private seller is almost always going to value their own car higher than what it's actually worth.
And, the longer he holds on to it (11's are right around the corner) the more he's going to chase a falling market.

A Prius because I'm green
I've never done it so I don't know how it works but I was told by multiple MB dealers that the original owner can do the sale through the dealer and you as the second owner can buy the extended warranty. You don't have to be the original owner if I remember correctly someone on here also talked to MB directly while at a dealership over the phone and they confirmed this. Call up a couple dealers and if they say no try MBUSA directly it doesn't hurt.

Starbrite: and the 2011s are already here.
If I were to sell mine today, I'd sell it privately for $59-60k. A 2009 with 19k on it (and new PS2s; car is perfect.) That's being realistic and fair to any buyer, imho. Plus I'm not going to try to squeeze extra $$ by sitting on the car and having to put up with with phone calls, tire kicking, and joy rides. The dealer gets paid to do that, not me.

Always remember, no sales tax on a private sale though...That's a chunk of change here in TX...Woulda been about $4000 on my car...
Harder to finance and yes they/we/I will usually value our cars at the higher end...Though I have a number in my head for mine at the end of the year that I think will probably fall more towards the middle...

I've never actually done it, but I read it in the state tax rules..?? I'll have to ask my bank when I buy my next car...
OH never mind...Guess they put a new law in place to nip that in the butt...We're all screwed..LOL...6.25% all day long...and if you buy it under value they can use a presumptive value and tax you even more if they want...
"The Texas Legislature passed the law to ensure all Texans pay their fair share of vehicle sales taxes. The additional revenue will help fund Texas schools. Texans who purchase used motor vehicles, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, from anyone other than a licensed dealer will owe tax of 6.25% on the highest amount of"
In addition to the ISD tax you pay on your property whether you have children or not...The price you pay for no state income tax I guess...Our schools should be good, because our roads are crap

Be glad you don't live in CT. !! Sales tax, when you buy the car, and annual registration fee.
PLUS an annual property tax at 70% assesed value. It averages ~ $36 per $1000 of assessed property
(but varies by town on something called the mill rate). BTW, this applies to boats as well.

You don't have to go through that hoop. As a second owner you can extend the warranty yourself. That was a change made 2 yrs ago.
I just got a quote from my local dealer today for the car I'm considering.
7/75 ( that's 7yrs after the in service date, NOT 7 yrs after the initial warranty expires) seems to be the best value. So, in my case 2014.

Car mileage is 23k and only 1 yr of factory warranty remaining. (purchased 8/07)
7/75 = 4100 +tax
6/75 = 3850 including tax (8.75%)
