Angry I can't f***ing believe it!!!

I just posted a thread on the recent problems with my car and there was some controversy over a gas leak problem from the gas tank. I had this problem a couple of years ago and thought it was fixed. Well guess what? I filled my gas tank and drove back to my garage and the wife just told me the garage reaks of gas! I have not yet found where the leak is coming from but it is definitely from my friggen car! This is unbelieveable. I am super pissed.

I just started smelling gas coming from my SL55 the other day. My brothers CLS55 just had something replaced. His car smelled of gas really bad.

Had the same problem two weeks ago - replaced both fuel pumps and the sending units - no gas smell. The link above is from another member that is shedding light on this issue that is more prevalent than first thought

I had the same problem with the gas smell. I took the seat off and re-tighten the fuel-pump baskets and it seem to solve the problem. Also, I've stopped overfill my car too. Good luck.

Welcome to the club...sorry for your troubles. I've had two E55's and both cars have been plagued with the gas issue> My patience with Mercedes has reached an end.

So this is affecting SLs and CLSs as well?

I have a feeling it affects all W211s including E63s.... It happened to a friend of mine with an E63, which made me paranoid, so I've been checking mine almost daily now waiting for it to happen

I had the same problem when I bought the car. It smelled like gas after I'd fill it up. Took it to my guy at MB and he replaced both fuel pumps. Thank goodness for the extended warranty.

Clearly this is a "old issue"

Only the newbies fall for the fuel paranoia?

Yeah, I got ya. Nothing to see folks.

Has anyone tackled this issued with a DIY repair? If so, was it a difficult repair? I believe my car had this problem with the previous owner. Looks as though the tank needs to be dropped to access the pump. Can't believe the fitting elbow is made from plastic!

Someone used a "double gasket" method.

The tank does not need to be dropped.

The entire design is crap. But I think the EPA is the main reason behind the design. The EPA said no more fuel return lines. So, MB came up with this hornets nest of hoses inside the gas tank. 2 fuel pumps...lines everywhere inside the tank and the fuel pressure regulator all inside the tank. A mess.

Thus the reason for the single plastic elbow and 3/8 fuel line feeding a 500hp monster. IMHO a stupid design.

I will inspect closer before we buy any performance vehicle made after 2005. This design and EPA mandate blows. My RS6 still has the return line and regulator on the fuel rail. No problems.
