Some thoughts on my recent LSD install...with pics.
I knew before I bought the car I was going to install the Quaife limited slip diff at some point. The cost and extensive install initially scared me away, with most shops quoting 10+ hours. Recently the diffs have been popping up for sale much cheaper, so I grabbed one from a forum member, who also happen to be able to install it
After a few days with it, I am very glad I pulled the trigger sooner than later.
I figured while launching, and on tight turns, I would notice an improvement - but the day to day driving is better as well.
Hard to explain, but the car simply feels more "planted". Even at parking lot speeds it seems to improve tight radius turning.
Don't get me wrong, the back wheels still break loose pretty easily, but at least I am going dead straight and spinning both wheels equally...lol.
I am thrilled at the improved overall responsiveness of the car and somewhat surprised it made such a big differences. Thought I would post up and see if I can't convince anyone else to join me on the traction side...lol.
SPECIAL THANKS TO MONEY-ONE!!!!
What a professional! He accomplished this install, along with a flush and fill of the transmission and coded and swapped out a new tcu (don't ask), all in about 7 hours. He was done exactly when he said, took time to explain everything, meticulously packed my old parts and escorted me on a test drive. The install is perfect.
But listen guys, he needs time to work on his own ride, so please don't call him until the Motec is in and running:
Oh, and he installs my meth kit and coilovers....actually never call him.
Here are some pics he snapped, in case anyone is interested:

Have fun with your "new" car. I said "new" because in my previous car, after installed the Quiafe it literally transform mycar drive to a new car. And keep us update on the coilovers please.

The LSD is just more efficient on putting power down rather than wasting it on wheel spin, but you'll still be able to go sideways. Since an E55 has plenty of torque, a power slide will be just as easy with the LSD. At higher speed, I agree, it's a little harder to brake the rear loose.

Sweet mod man! I'm so glad to hear you really like it and other members agree it's a great addition to the car. Can't wait to get my car down to Kleemann in October for LSD and TB upgrades. Oh and putting the car on drugs I myself won't even try
Reading threads like this keeps the bug bitting! Thanks for the pics and review
*Edit* By the way does anyone have a comparable difference between Kleemann's LSD and the Quaife? I would doubt there would be anybody that has tried both but maybe ridden in a car that had one versus the other? TIA

Ahmad has had both, started with the kleemmann unit and then went to the quaife unit.

Can't wait to see this thing finally go down the track, B.
Looking forward to seeing how you do with her. Should hook with a well prepped MIR. Are you running D/Rs?

I am unbelievably excited to go down that 1320. While I have seen a few bumps in the road, and the journey was a little longer than I thought it would be, very glad to be ready.
I am running PS2's on stick rims. Charlie offered a few passes with his drag set up, so I might take him up on it depending how the day goes.
Given my lack of experience my goals are very modest. Mostly focusing on trap.....of course that is until you get behind the wheel

Out Of Control!!
Glad you like it! Money-one is definitely da man when it comes to this stuff! For those of you that haven't experienced an LSD (not the drugs) you should. It is hard to explain but even when spinning the car is alot more controllable. Don't be delusional and think the car will no longer spin when installing this but it will spin less and be more predictable. I love mine. Plus it makes it easier to spin both rear tires when doing a burnout (A whole nother topic that I think should be addressed so people dont fry their open diffs)
Yea I have had both and I actually switched because of a misdiagnosis. Basically I was hearing a clunking sound from the rear only during right turns and it seemed like it was happening per revolution (diagnosed as diff by many people). Put in the Quaife and the sound was still there. Turned out that the exhaust was tapping the body on right turns! Doh To be honest the Quaife is a superior unit. The Kleemann unit is more like a phantom grip LSD for those familiar with that. Quaife also has 0-100% lockup and I believe Kleemann only goes to 70% (dont quote me on that). The Kleemann unit will wear out over time whereas the Quaife will not. I honestly don't remember feeling much of a difference between the two though. Hope that helps

My pleasure!
Funny thing is that I just didn't here about to many members saying how great this mod is, so I thought I would give the LSD some props...lol.
Honestly it was a ride in my buddy's 350whp 335 (he just installed a Dinan LSD) to convince me to do this...lol.

Coded and swapped the TCU? Please explain.....
Does this have anything to do with allowing the 2006 model to do a full-on "ESP off" burnout like the earlier 2003 - 2004 e55s?
I notice my own car will only spin the rears for about 4 seconds before the car takes over and shuts down engine power... Other folks here with 2005 and 2006 models seem to have the same issue.
I've been trying to figure out if there was a TCU or ECU change sometime after 2004 that caused the cars to behave differently during burnouts?
Am I on the right track, or totally off base?

Ok guys explain to me whats going on.... I have always heard great things about the LSD, and it was always on my mod list..I have had my car for 3 years now, a 2006, full bolt ons and numerous times to the track. Here is the thing..
1) I can burn both tires until there is nothing left
2.) I can cut 1.6 60's with 18 inch drag radials
3.) As im doing a rolling burn out the car will spin the tires forever or until the car goes sideways and the ESP kicks in, for what I am assuming, anti-roll
so my question is, WHY do I need an LSD? and why do I not have the burn out problems like others?
Thanks guys!
Chad

I was talking to a tuner here about the mods on my car and perhaps further tuning and he suggests Motec, I was like nah mate this is a merc not an evo lol, ecu controls everything on this ( they mostly build/tune Jap cars) and hes like, im sure it can be done...
