Help me decide.

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker but never posted before. I am finally financially ready to buy one of these beasts. I currently have a 2006 VW GTI, so the power difference is going to be extremely noticeable.

I am having trouble deciding between an 05-06 E55 or an 07 E63. From my research, the main difference is the engine and transmission. From what I have gathered, the interior and exterior are relatively the same, except for some minor differences.

Here is how I break down the differences:

Pros for E55:

1. More Torque
2. Much easier to get bigger gains with a tune and pulley.
3. Cheaper then E63

Cons for E55

1. 5 speed transmission
2. More susceptible to heat soak

Pros for E63

1. Newer 7 speed transmission
2. More HP in stock form

Cons for E63

1. Not as tuner friendly
2. More expensive
3. Less torque

Am I missing anything between the two?

Has anyone gone from an E55 to an E63 and regretted their decision?

Thanks for your help

Also, anyone in the San Diego area willing to take me for a ride in either one?

Mike

Some other differences are that the E63 has 6 piston front calipers with two piece rotors, more expensive to replace then the E55. I prefer the E63, more ten the E55, not because I have but becuase of the look, updated front and rear fascia.

There are couple guys on this board that had e55, bought e63 and then got back to E55. so go figure, and I heard that 7-speed tranny is weak

I'm sure the E55 have the same calipers as the E63. I bought my E63 for the updated look as well, I don't like the E55 front. Plus the NA engine has less moving parts, less trouble. No major problems since I have it.

Having had both, go with the one that has the longest MBUSA CPO warranty. You'll be pleased either way.. (I still have the 63!).

Love the E55 power train. Love the E63 looks. So today I enjoy the best of both worlds.

your asking people for a joy ride? --- just go to a dealership and start test driving them -- Surely, your heart will speak to one more than another.
* E55 brakes are different
* not sure you can trust the stated HP of the E55 'underrated'
* E55 trannie is considered a ROCK
* Heat soak is more of an issue if you Modded it or have a bad pump

Both are AMG and awesome -- cant really go wrong -- but since you even mentioned Modding as a factor -- the only choice is E55 ---

Take a day and drive both cars back to back. That should make your decision easier. I would encourage you to seriously take warranty availability into consideration. Personally, I would not own an AMG without a warranty. Good luck. Whatever choice you make I'm sure you'll be happy.
