You actually remove the factory stuff intact and can replace it if needed.

My car as a DD seeing all sorts of dirt, sand and rain in Canada, I put these flap suckers back on, for added security. Not going to risk $$$$$ for 5hp.

If you do this mod make sure you clean out your air filter box twice a year and it wouldn't hurt to replace the air filter yearly or clean it if you run K&N. I just bought an 07 E63 with 43k miles and was shocked at how much dirt had accumulated in the OEM filters including leaves and junk in the air box below the filter. I'd expect even more dirt without the flap.
