AMG Tech Session
I had a chat with Steve Erlichman from MBUSA yesterday. I posed the question to him about, AMG possibly having tech sessions for our AMG owners at various AMG Performance Centers, specifically at Euromotorcars of Bethesda which is the closest one to me. His comment was, that is a dam good idea, and that he will contact Mr. Willard, and the gang at Euromotorcars to gauge their interests in hosting such an event. So for those of you that want to get involved, and are interested in this, contact your local AMG Performance Center, and get the ball rolling. I'm working on this for our local AMG Owners Club for our Spring AMG event.

Well, I had my E63 in for the complimentary 25 point inspection and brake service. So they called me up, when i was at work. To tell me that they had completed their inspection service, and my car is perfect nothing wrong, and it doesn't need any service. I was extremely happy, because I perform all the service myself. I just validated my own mechanical skills..woo hoo

I would recommend everyone doing it, at least then you will know what services your AMG needs. I was fortunate that my brake fluid, transmission fluid or engine coolant doesn't need changing. I'll change the engine coolant, tranny and rear differential next year.

Good news, for next Wednesday. Steve Erlichmen the AMG Training Manager for North America will be at Euromotorscars for a managment meeting, to discuss some of my ideas for a tech session at the various Performance Centers.

Are there any tricks to changing the oil on the E63? I know that may sound stupid, but I have not tried on that car yet. Just checking to see if there are any tricks, or if it is just climb under....take out oil pan bolt....drain....replace bolt....put oil in the top....check dipstick...done.

Nope, its as simple as that. Oh, I almost forgot, there are two sumps on the E63, one front and one rear. In saying that, you have two drain bolts, and don't forget the oil cooler, if you chose to drain that. If not, then no big deal. I've found that it is easier added the oil, by pouring it directly into the oil filter housing. I remove the oil filler cap, and oil filter element for ventilation, the oil flows out much better. After all the oil is drained, I replaced the crush washers on both drain plugs, and tighten to 22-25 ft lbs. As for the oil cooler, I just tighten to what I think is tight enough. Remember, that it is alumimum so don't over tighten it. If you don't have a torque wrench, just get it tight, then tighten it just a little bit more, and your golden. You don't want to strip the thread in the bed pan aka oil pan or oil cooler.

Sack5000,
Yes your absolutely right depending upon what chassis the engine is mounted in will effect the bed pan design. I don't know about the front drain plug being unserviceable, because I drain the oil from the front and rear sump all the time. And just replace the crush washers and tighten to 22 ft lbs. The front sump contains at least a 1/2 qt of oil after draining the rear sump, and always leaks on the front sway bar. Which always needs to be wiped clean of oil. And then the oil cooler has some, I can't say how much. But if all of them are drained, you can be assured you got all the oil out. Which I think is better then the suction method. the dealership uses it because it's an effective way of removing oil without lifting the car, which takes time. Then theirs the removal of the 2 belly pans, one under the oil cooler and the engine. I know that when I change my oil, that their is only about 1% of old oil still left in the engine. I prefer this method for myself. But it's really up to the individual, but IMHO it is Happy

I have addressed this issue, with Euromotorcars of Bethesda. About having a Tech Session with AMG owners, at a future AMG event at the dealership. Since their an AMG Performance Center is the local area.

Thanks for the help, guys. So, if I am reading correctly, there are covers that need removed in order to access these drain areas? Also, the 'non-serviceable' drain plug really is serviceable?
I am trying to picture the underside of my car in my mind, but that is not working.

Exactly, just bellY pans that need to be removed in order to access the bottom of the engine.
