Thread on how-to install city lights?

I can find all sorts of stuff regarding city lights & LED's...but can't find anything on the installation.

Now that I've got 'em...I want to get 'em in.

What about the housing? Two bolts on front...from behind...just twist the whole unit out?

I looked at it briefly but not too in depth obviously.

Nice deadmau5 logo - show here in Atlanta back in Oct was sweet.

Essentially, reach down behind city light housing.
Follow the electrical lead/socket that is plugged into the back of the housing until you get to the actual twist-in bulb socket.
Twist [clockwise I believe] the socket.
Once you've turned 90*, pull rearward.
Examine housing in your hand, pull out bulb, replace with bulb or LED.
Reverse instructions. Repeat on other side of car.

Note: I would try turning on your lights with the new bulb in, just to make sure that it is seated correctly, before twisting it back into the housing.

Also make sure the bulb is FIRMLY seated in the socket. If it's not it'll vibrate loose and fall in the lamp housing Turn the socket clockwise in relation to you standing in front of the car. It actually turns counter-clockwise, just like a bolt, in relation to the rear of the lamp housing.

It was just as easy as Benzodoc described and I got each one lined up on the first shot (50/50 there, right?).

I actually pushed the LED's all the way in and then backed them out a little bit as described before so that they don't touch the resistor. Now I'm worried they're not seated well enough.

Guess we shall see...I definitely don't want them falling out into the housing.

I appreciate your offer but side tinted windows are illegal in Calif. Btw I did not personally attack you, I simply left you a bread crumb. Maybe you are one of the 2 percent of people that like that grille on a W211. I am not. The only time I see them is on salvage cars bought through auction. That is a fact. If that is your taste, you are welcome to it however my comment was indeed intended to be helpful.

I know that tinted fronts are illegal in CA and that was a total childish jab on my part...and I apologize for it. My car wasn't salvage (thank god!) and I (yes) put the grille on myself. I can always swap it out, but I do like it. I personally have never seen a salvage E55 so I wouldn't know if that is a fact or not. In fact, in person, I really do think it looks great - I do fall in that 2% I suppose. Knowing that you actually meant to be helpful accept my apology.

Cheers.

Marijuana is legal but tint is illegal.

My post was bad too - I appologize. Maybe the reason I dont like the grille is I saw one on a car here in San Diego that was for sale, and when I looked up the VIN, I found the "Before" pictures with the front end tore off. That may have planted the seed.
  • I like the stand up star on the hood- (I think I may be the only one)
  • I like Chrome Wheels - Most people dont
  • I like Chrome Grille - Other prefer black
So I am sorry I took the opportunity to start crap... that was more childish on my part. Welcome to the forums, and I promise, my next feedback will be positive. There is a wealth of information here!

Where did you get the LED's and which one's did you get? Also, on a different but not completely unrelated subject.... is there a way to have the fog lights come on automatically with the headlights in "Auto" mode? I love the look, but when I turn them on manually, I ALWAYS forget to turn them off when I park.

That's why the car beeps at you when your lights are switched on. The message that says "please turn off headlights" also comes up in the cluster.

Does your car not have these warnings?

Yes, it does beep at me.... but I use keyless go, so it beeps at me everytime i open the damn door telling me not to forget my key. I guess that I am now immune to the beeping.

Yeah...two type A's.

Imagine that...people with type A personalities on *this* board.

By the way - got my LED's from JBSpeed. $18...can't beat that.

Next up will be LED's in the fogs so they all match.

You can just buy bulbs instead of replacing the entire light assembly.

There are only 2 screws per light, you'll have to spend to get ones that have built in resistors but it's the easiest install imaginable.

Did you consider HID in your fogs so you still have functional and cosmetic benefit? Couldn't be happier with my setup. All bulbs match now
