Interesting, because this is the first E63 that's been reported to leak. I'm curious as to the parts numbers. I have a feeling they are the same. Be sure to post back and also post part numbers if you get anything changed out under warranty.

Actually, this guys looks like he encountered the problem too....

They ended up taking it to the local Mercedes dealership and had the fuel sending unit replaced... I just noticed this thread. I got a copy of the invoice where they paid the dealership roughly $800-900 to fix the issue (it was out of warranty).
And my friend's E63 had the same issue around 8 months ago.... and now add me to the list as well. They first replaced the pumps, then it happened again, then they replaced the tank, then it happened again, and then they replaced the sending units. So far, it has not happened again, but lets wait and see what happens.

My goodness this is getting out of hand.... Think it would help if I made a PDF petition for you guys to fill out, then print em and mail them to both MBUSA and the NHTSA?

Create the .PDF template and see if one of the moderators will put it the top of this forum as a sticky...

This particular issue seems FAR too common and far too widespread to let this topic vanish into obscurity down on Page 2 (or lower). Once a topic drops off the front page of the forum it's too easy to lose track of it.

yikes. Well to update my issue w/my 05. 2008 campaign recall they replaced both. So i had to pay out of pocket $900 for the DS fuel sending unit. EasyCare Warranty not covering since its the "fuel filter module" which is not on the list to be covered.

update

ok so i dont drive the car much and the car started to stanck the garage with fuel smell after i had filled it up to the top top top, i guess thats a no no, because i decided to take it out today and run the fuel down a bit and see if it goes away and so far so good no fuel smell. I will also say, i never saw fuel dripping or anything in particular.

i have an appointment for tuesday at the dealer but i might skip it if it stops smelling and wait till i put gas again but this time ill stop when pump stops.

Faulty Fuel Sender (4 years old with 33600 miles)

I noticed a scent of gasoline in my garage the morning after filling up my fuel tank. Notified my SA and he told me to take the car in immediately. Root cause was a faulty fuel sender. The tech flipped up the rear seats, removed the circular black cover on the drivers side and visually pointed out where the fuel was leaking. Interestingly, the issue only occurred during a full tank and I could not smell the odor inside the vehicle. Parts arrive Friday morning and I hope to pick it up by Saturday.

You should get it checked and fixed. Not sure why it's not a recall but it's definitely a safety issue. Even if out of factory warranty, without CPO, additional CPO or 3rd party extended warranty coverage, Mercedes might still cover it.

im not worried about warranty the car definitely is under it and my SA is awared of the issue or problem already so...... i was just doing a test about it bc it was funny that from one day to the other the car started to have the issue

i called MBCorp and they said it was up to the Service Mgr at the dealer i went to for them to give any good will. I received no good will, so i gave them a bad survey/how did we do? My warranty (Easycare) didnt cover since it was a "fuel filter" and cost me out of pocket close to $1k.

Not covered under EasyCare? Do you have the best plan available? It's not that your fuel filter was due for maintenance or neglected, it's the seals within the fuel sender assembly. This is not a PM issue, it's a defective part. Fuel filter is not scheduled to be changed for a while based on miles and time.

fwiw, I'd also try to argue (and with MBUSA) that the fuel sending unit is part of the emissions system. They went to returnless fuel systems due to EPA mandates which was because of pollution (fuel escaping into the atmosphere.) The unit that goes bad includes the filters but it's not the filter that's the problem. It's the design (and the plastics) of the entire unit that's at issue.

So now there's fuel going into the atmosphere and that's illegal. And anything under emissions systems has a longer warranty than the regular car warranty.

You guys should post your updates here as well so we have one centralized thread with all the members who got affected:

Urgent notice. 03-06 E55's that were involved in the fuel sender recall are bombs.

I remember this thread was started as well but for some reason it got now where

Fuel Leak RECALL petition *(*(PLEASE READ)*)*

The sad part about this problem is that no matter how many times you fix it, it'll keep happening every couple of years because, as 220S mentioned, the design of the parts themselves are bad

I have a 2007 e350 with 40k miles just off warranty. I have the same issue that so many have described with the smell of gas vapors especially under the back, driver's side wheel well. I took it to dealer and they replaced fuel sending unit. MB USA paid for 70% of part(s). As soon as I filled the tank the smell was even worse. I mean really overwhelming. I had to put my car outside as the AC/heating unit and water heating unit have pilot lights. Going back to the dealer tomorrow. My local MB independent mechanic said this was not a design error but a manufacturing error and that they know how to fix it which involves changing the fuel tank (and several other components I'm sure). Will let you know what happens.

I have a 2007 E350 4matic, bought in July-2011 when it was just out off
warranty. I've experienced the gas smell every time filling up and did not
identify the problem until reading this post. Yes, I have gas leak beneath
driver's rear seat, in the cabin. I just filed and submit the complaint to NHTSA. Am I the 1st 2007-E350 4matic to submit this to NHTSA ?

Might want to check in the "W211" section not the "W211 AMG" section. Known problem for the E55's tho.

Ok bad joke Anyways, as an fyi - there's a member with a C55 AMG that may have experienced an identical issue:

Well, this is crap! I thought my case was a rarity since folks in the C55 forum didn't recognize this issue. I just went through this myself and was hit with an $850 out of pocket expense. My warranty only covered the faulty parts, but in order to fix the issue, there's a superseded part that only works if you replace the passenger side as well - which the warranty will not cover if it is not broken.

Now I'm curious, some of have stated here that the problem will reoccur - I am wondering if the superseded part is a better designed part - did it address the issue? Was there a recall that I have missed?

I agree with the shock to see (should have taken a picture) there was a puddle of gasoline under the the circular black cover under the rear seat.

If this is a recurring problem even after a fix, I will try not to fill the tank full for now on. To fix this again will cost me approx $1600 (originally they were saying $2k), and my warranty will expire in June next year. I will be calling the dealership tomorrow to ask, there should be a warranty on the replacement parts for a year. But a car of this caliber should not develop gas leaks, especially resulting in puddles forming on the interior of the car.

Also for reference, my car is a 2005 with 56K normal use miles, never modded or tracked (not that it should matter anyway).

I also filed a report with the EPA. Maybe they can open an investigation too. They already caught MB once and it costs them $59 million.

Our '07 E63 started having this problem a month or so after the warranty expired. So far all I can find is a puddle on top of the fuel sending unit, I don't know where it is coming from. Just filed a complaint with the NHTSA, but so far there are only three complaints for the '07 E63. We need more people to file something with the NHTSA, it only takes a couple minutes and can get this fixed if everyone tries.
