Wyoming just uses sand. It doesn't do nearly as good of a job as salt but we don't have to worry about the corrosion. We do get destroyed windshields and nasty rock chips on the front end though.

The only bad thing about the temperature hovering, around 32 is that my local dealership will not wash the cars. Because, it creates a skating rink in the back of the dealership. But this week, we have been lucky, most days are in the high 30s, so my E63 got washed yesterday. And my C63 will be washed tomorrow, but it doesn't have any road salt on it, just the salt dust It's funny because I guy on base, asked me how do I keep my car so clean. I told him that I haven't driven it in the snow. C63 in the snow with summer performance tires equals

Question: Does 2 coats of wax protect from this salt/snow?

The wax will protect the surface, but most rust occurs from underneath. Salt tends to get into places where a general car wash doesn't reach. So that is why its important, to wash your vehicle often in a salt/snow environment. Don't let the salt sit on your cars for weeks
I make it my mission to get the salt off

I'll live with a little bit of rust and corrosion if it means I don't have to use a pry bar to open my doors after washing the car. Like others have said, it's just a car. Own it, drive it as much as you can, sell it, and buy something else. My car will be long gone(sold or wrapped around a tree) before the elements have a chance to destroy it.

Damn. Being an ****, fanatical car freak like I am, hearing your salt stories is making really appreciative of being out in California.... Not to mention, offers some level-headed prospective to me, for when I freak out about the smaller things I freak out about, in terms of my car.

At the same time, hearing these stories of snow makes me envious. So beautiful. Just not for my car (or my cold hating a$$ ).

What do they put the salt on the roads for anyway? Traction?

It melts the ice. I used to live in Aspen and they used some sort of ice melting stuff with sand or something. I don't think it was pure salt.

All the Aspen Police drove Saab police cars back then. I used to drink with Hunter S. Thompson at the Woody Creek Tavern. It was a crazy drunken drug town back then, now it's more just a fancy rich town.

I get these statements from my wife just about everytime I start to get a bit **** about my car, for instance complaining about the salt causing rust and corrosion.

"It's just a car! You'll sell it before anything serious happens because of the damn salt...WHO CARES"

Then I just go crawl into a fetal position in the corner. The wrath of a pregnant woman, I tell ya!

She's right and you're right. We should just enjoy these cars and not worry about petty crap like that.

I get this from the women (mainly) in my life too (Mom, Girlfriend).

Here's the thing. We're car enthusiasts. Addicts. Addictions aren't healthy, or rationale, or frugal. It's not romantic to think of the car you love as a beater, a rental (to give to someone else after). Even if that's the reality. Part of living the addiction of "Car Enthusiast", is treating it like you're gonna love, and cherish it forever.

At the same time, it's very much personality based. I'm OCD, ****-retentive, control/preservation freak, paranoid in certain ways, etc. So my car, being one of the only material items that I really care about, takes up a lot of that.

Salt and Sand mixture in Kansas and they are very liberal about the application process! It stinks but for the average driver who has limited exposure to winter driving, it is a must. She's been in the garage and will stay that way until march or so....I just don't trust other drivers in nasty conditions. Rather be safe than sorry!

Man, I get bent when I go a week or so without driving my car (feel like I'm wasting money with daily/monthly/weekly/etc. payments).

Some of you poor guys go months without driving them, whilst paying payments!

Thankfully, I paid mine off when I bought it But still not storing it, I go into withdrawal if I don't drive her for more than a day!

These cars depreciate like crazy. You're paying for the depreciation if you drive it or not. I used to save my cars for the next owner, but now I just drive them.
