Define "Certified Pre-Owned"
This guy has been trying to sell his car on Ebay for several months now. He keeps advertising it as Certified Pre Owned when actually he is a private seller and HE bought the car from a dealer G-d knows how many miles ago as a "CPO".
What constitutes a CPO? Can I list my car as a CPO just because 2 years ago and 20K miles ago it was CPO'd?
Can I pay to have my car inspected at the dealer and have the "CPO" stamp of approval?

I believe dealers can only get that certification from Mercedes and not individuals, but he is obviously using it as a selling point. Either way all it means to me is a higher priced car!

Have him photograph the drivers b-pillar. If the car is cpo'd there will be a blue round cpo sticker

Only a certified Mercedes Dealer can offer a car as certified pre-owned. If an individual sells it, then its a private sell. So the ad is misleading

CPO is a MB offered extended warranty and should be transferable to the new owner. If a car is certified then i am sure it probably has been taken care of.As long as the problem is not excluded from certification list then more then likley it would be covered. So yes CPO is way better then having most of the extended warranties that people have.
Just call the MB and give them the VIN and ask them when does it expires and if it's nice car then go for it. I would still have the car inspected by the dealer especially for non covered items.

My car is CPOd and there is no sticker. I would not allow a sticker on my car. So I would not go by stickers. Try running the vin through the dealer, that is the only real way to know for sure.

Not true either. Private sale to private sale, if a car is CPOd it stays CPOd. If you trade the car in to a dealer, even if it is a MB dealer, the CPO is cancelled. I just went through all this with MB corporate.

emoving and faast are correct... If he does have a CPO car, and it is a private sale, it will transfer to the new owner.. I am sure a nominal doc fee would apply... If it is traded in to any dealer, the CPO (or OEMextended warranty) dies with that trade...
I have a buddy at PPMBZ if you want to send me a PM, he can put you in touch with their F&I people to sort it out for you. I have also done 'flips' through them to save on taxes when I have sold a vehicle outright as well; basically taking them a buyer for my current (non-CPO) car.
