Yesterday I drove an 2005 E55. I have liked AMG cars since they days of the Miami Vice TV series.
The E55 I drove yesterday looks brand freaking new. I found no scratches on the inside or outside. Tires are a matching set. Underhood is clean. This particular E55 has all options and was originally stickered at over $88k. The car has 68k miles now.
Here is the carfax.

I have read a few threads that are giving me fear about buying this car due to some potential large repair bills that seem very common for this car.
Anyways, please provide insight or tips regarding this car.
Thanks

Get a warranty so you don't have the repair bills. The car looks clean except it's been driven in winter in Virginia so I'd look for body issue related to salt corrosion.

Yeah, I checked into a warranty and the dealer is offering a 3rd party warranty at $3,005 bucks.... That seemed a bit high to me, but I have never bought extended warranties for any of my cars....

Is this car being sold at a Mercedes Benz Dealership or someplace else like a Carmax?
If it is not at a MB dealer have a PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) performed on it. A wise man would have this car checked out at a Mercedes Dealership before buying it. Mercedes knows these cars better then Jim Bob's Motors. The biggest thing, is that you want to protect your investment, with a warranty as you don't want unexpected issues arising three days later. As these AMG cars can be expensinve to repair. You need to put the car on a lift, and check under it, any car can be cleaned up inside and out, but the undercarriage, that's a whole different story. We are here to help you thru this.

Its being sold at an individual dealership that specializes in Mercedes. After praying and reading the horror stories about problems with these cars, I have just about decided to pass on the E55. Its a shame because I really love the bodystyle, engine performance and everything about these cars....

The bottom line is that the E55 makes for one attractive offer, knowing that you can now own an 100K AMG at 2/3 the price. Not realizing that these 100K cars still have very expensive repair costs associated with them. That cost their obviously not prepared for, and in some cases can't afford.

I have owned over 10 Lexus' in my life and I expected zero issues with them and they pretty much lived up to that expectation. I have owned my share of German rockets too and expected to have some issues as that is the "pay to play" part of the game. But the driving experience with the German ships clearly outweigh the time spent at the workshop IMHO- YMMV.
Id rather have the performance and deal with the repairs than drive a car that is basically numb and isolated. Im not saying all Lexus are that way but thats pretty much their reputation. The IS-F- which I have- may be the sole vehicle that is out of the norm.

I believe most of German car from year 2000 after 100K miles, it will be more problematic specially the High performance. You will need $$$ to keep it. I just want to get rid off my 745Li ...... getting a lot of problems with it and all fixed..... fix a lot of sensors and cost total of $2K in 3 months, so far I get more luck with Mercedes than BMW.
