Contemplating a 2001 Audi S4 Avant as my DD
Well, I haven't gotten bored of my CLS55 just yet. What I am bored of is my Mazda 3 daily driver. On top of which, I've never owned a stick so I think it's about time I popped my cherry.
What do you guys think of an old school 2001 Audi S4 wagon?...Perhaps a stage 3 or even stock? They can be had anywhere between 8-13k

I absolutely LOVE that car. I had the A6 with the bi-turbo motor in it from the S4 and it was a blast to drive. Not as quick as my 211 now but it was fun at the time
.
Only thing I would be worried about is all the lil electrical gremlins that audi's are known for. I got rid of mine right when it had around 50k miles on it and thankfully it ran fine until then. Granted you could find a nice clean one with low miles, it would be a great car to have. Especially when you start modding to around Stage 3 levels!

Let me give you some advice from when I had mine last summer, don't do it, loll. Not for a daily, no sir and I had a stage 2 in a sedan. Spent $2500 in the first 500 miles. The one I bought also had all the maintenance done.

2006 E55 2004 Audi S4 (gone and missed)
If you want an S4 as a dd, go B6 with the V8 I had one with the six speed before my E55 and it was a great car. Not as mod friendly as the b5, but rock solid and sounds beastly with just a simple cat-back. A much better option for a dd than the b5 as far as reliability goes.

I JUST sold my 2001 Audi S4 Avant stage 3+ to my younger brother. It was my Girlfriends daily driver for a long time. She absoultely loved the thing! We sold it for her 2008 M5 a few weeks ago.
I know everyone says how un-reliable they are, and yes, they can be. But we had nothing but good things to say about our S4. We would just beat the **** out of that car ALL the time, and never had anything really bad happen to it. Although when you go stage 3, most of the expensive parts (turbos) have already been replaced.
For us, it was a great DD.

Thanks for the responses guys. You guys are definitely making me rethink my master plan.
here is B5 stage 3 i'm trying to deal on;

I had a b5 Audi 1.8t back in 2000 and loved it. I guess this would be a big step backwards with respect to reliability issues. But a huge step up in the fun department.
What should I do??? I guess I'll starting researching some S4 on the B6 platform

Interesting to see the comments. We have a 2000 S4 stage 3 right now as a DD when I say a DD it is used everyday (sunny, raining, and snow). Don't get me wrong it was a brand new build six months ago so the usaul maintenance is still required (the body has 100k) for example last night noticed an axle boot is ripped so an axel is getting ordered today.
We had a reputable shop do the build therefore we don't have any issues with the car.
Right now the S4 can take the E55 BUT the 55 is bone stock so once a few mods are done the S4 will be reading the AMG badge.

I'd say get the V8 S6 Avant or a V8 allroad on if you want an Audi wagon....much better cars, less maint. About the same prices. The S4 Avants are kinda on the small side (IMO)
They're good/reliable cars with the 2.7Ts if you don't go crazy with the mods. The V8s are even more reliable.

B6 V8
One major problem has been the timing chain idler assm. Those can take out the entire engine.
B5 V6
Lots of expensive items to repair as you go north of 75k. Turbos will almost always go and need to be replaced in pairs by dropping the engine.
For a daily driver I would consider the A4 avant 2.0T and throw some power mods, suspension and wheels on the car to bring the performance up. B6 or B7

While a b4 S4 is a great car, it would be a poor choice for a daily driver from a reliability point of view.
A stage 3 s4 as a fun car and the CLS a daily makes much more sense.
I just got a high milage CLS 500 as my daily and retired my Mcoupe. I couldnt be happier.

The B5/C5 V6 2.7TT was/is one of Ward's 10 best engines...mine has 170K in the allroad ,no real big problems, original turbos !...change the oil every 5K and do the TB every 80K and they'll last well over 200K easily and w/o breaking the wallet. BUT the allroads air suspension IS troublesome after some years regardless of miles. But the parts to fix have dropped considerably in price. Anyway...just my 2 cents.
