SL65 project. Code name maximum "OverKill"
What's up Mbworld,
Haven't posted much lately. I just got done with my latest project. I took some pictures with my iphone 4.
I figured it would be easier to document the build with some pictures and start a thread once it was completed. I find teaser threads to be slightly irritating unless those obligations are fulfilled within a reasonable amount of time.
The thought of a black series body kit was being considered for all of about 4 hours. The next morning I woke up and decided that's not the direction I wanted to go with this project. It looks great and begs for attention. But, my friend wanted to drive his car to work and take his wife out to a nice dinner once in awhile. Not to the set of a rap video or an exotic car meet. I also wanted a classy look that was subtle yet aggressive. The 2010 SL65 was the hot ticket.
Some details of the build:
2005 SL65 AMG with 16k miles
V12 biturbo
Black exterior with grey interior
Fully equipped with the panoramic roof, disctronic, and every other option from Mercedes Benz
2010 SL65 spec Matte silver front lip
Red AMG brake calipers with white logos then clear coated
Lowering links
Carbon fiber interior trim
Perforated leather and carbon fiber keyless go shift knob
Huper optic ceramic tint 40%
2010 SL65 clear smoked 3rd brake light
Carbon fiber AMG trunk spoiler
Eurosport euro63rs wheels. Gloss black lip with machined face. 20x8.5, 20x10
Continental contiSportContact tires. 245-30-20 fronts (255s or possibly 265s are next) 305-25-20 rears
2010 OEM SL65 AMG front bumper, grill, mesh screen, hood, vents, fenders, bi xenon lights with active cornering, rear bumper, diffuser, parking sensors, wiring harnesses, badges, exhaust with newer style tips, and a giant laundry list of other parts, misc bolts, wiring harnesses, washers, clips, etc...
This all got started when my good friend decided it was time to buy a new car. Coming out of 2 suv's he was itching to get back into the game. He was one of the first to own a 2003 E55... Back when it was the gotta have it car of it's time. My buddy asked me to help him decide. There were talks about a modded to the hill C6 Z06, Modded GTR, Porsche 997 turbo, and MB CL63 to name a few.
I offered my concept of purchasing a used SL65 and allowing me to do a full 2010 conversion on it. After riding in my E55 many times and seeing the quality of my E63 conversion. He was very interested... We set a budget for the entire build... Ultimately, the final product would look and obtain the wow factor of a brand new 200k car but, would cost slightly less then half the price.... He showed up at my door the next day and the search began. The best part for me was. We get to trade cars once in awhile.
We came across a gorgeous 2005 with less then 16k miles. I had my friend at House of imports check the car out and he said it was a cream puff and looked and even smelled brand new. I wasn't surprised... The car was executive owned and very well kept with maintenance records. In fact it has never even seen rain. We went to meet the owner at his home. Saw his other cars. A new cayenne turbo S, and the wicked ford raptor SVT. The center piece of his current stable was the 65. We came back a week later and picked up the car and drove it straight to my garage.
My goal was to make the car look as stock as possible. The headlights and parking sensors had to be rewired to function correctly. Instead of cutting the wires off and soldering them with the new plugs. We dissembled the existing plugs without any cutting. Leaving a clean factory look that is nearly undetectable. Luckily it worked! I used all OEM Mercedes parts. The body shop I chose was one Ive used before and also does work for a local Mercedes dealer. My job was to make sure everything was done correctly, on time, and to manufacturer specifications. Not an easy task but it was well worth it. I strive for perfection in whatever I do and this project wasn't going to be any different.
I had my eyes on a set of concave wheels that I wanted to powder coat charcoal grey. Unfortunately, it wouldn't have been possible without increasing his budget. I told my buddy we would stay within the budget and I did. I decided to invest into everything we could that would identify the 65 as the newest model. Instead of going half way and buying a flashy set of wheels. Adding to the conversion later would be more difficult and time consuming then swapping out the wheels. My other challenge was getting the car on the road within a short period of time. A custom set of wheels with a 8-10 week lead time plus powder coating was out of the question. Not to mention the extra cost. I got a great deal on a new version of the euro63rs wheels. Not only were they in stock but they cleared the monster brakes of the 65.
This project would not have been possible without the help and support of the following people and businesses. I would like to thank:
Jeff the Vp
Ivan @ DCT motorsports
Roy @ Eurosport wheels
Troy @ Newlife auto body
House of imports Mercedes Benz
Albert @ The wheel supply
Josh @ Muffler man
Eric @ Dub
Anthony P
Sean "the ricker" Mbworld OG
Salvador @ Perfect window tint
And of course the owner of the car. My buddy Kris. Who deserves most of the credit.
During the course of the build. The project started to take on a life of its own. We agreed to call it OverKill. Because, a drop top 600+hp V12 biturbo isn't really a necessity. But, it's a lot of fun. Did I mention how fast thing thing is? It climbs to triple digits without any fuss and the power delivery is smooth as silk.
Future mods being considered are:
20 inch concave wheels powder coated charcoal grey
drag radials with lighter and smaller diameter wheels
custom down pipes or switch to high flow race cats
custom cold air intake system or larger plenum air intake boxes
custom OE tune for increased boost
cm30 intercooler pump
custom intercoolers with larger pump
custom ram air scoops
If anyone has questions about doing a conversion. Just let me know and I'll try to help.
I would like to hear everyone's feedback. Good or bad, hate it or love it. Tell me what you think??
Thanks for Looking at my thread

Congrats on the project! I'd like to offer one suggestion...consider either:
1. Painting/clearing the rear diffuser gloss black
2. Getting it done in carbin fiber
The first is a lot less expensive proposition but both would really add that additional oomph to the rear end. Just my opinion...whatever the case...you done good!

If you want to make it a true "OverKill" project, go with a wide body kit too.

I am not sure I like the fact you can look through the lower front screen and see the pavement. Reminds me of some cheap civic body kit. Isnt there a lower belly plate you can put in like all the factory cars have? Love the Meisterschaft and would love to hear it. Also if he ws gonna spend that much money, why did he cheap out on the rims? The factory 65 rims are better then those.
