As far as I can tell the Alt pulley spins freely,,and it's not like a rubbery burnt belt smell, it's much more like an electrical smell, sort of....it's weird....

FML I changed this part in the middle of December and now it looks like it may be dead already. I wish I used a Bosch part...
Randomly today the red battery message comes on, but this time my heater fan doesn't work, I'm told on the screen that I should turn my comand unit off, the convenience message is on....i drove it for about an hour trying to charge the battery but then the problem got worse. The voltage must have dropped a good amount and not been charging because I was getting messages about brakes being defective, stop vehicle etc and it was beeping at me.
My voltmeter is dead so I need to buy one. My guess is that the non-Bosch regulator has failed already or something. Gonna order a Bosch part now and hopefully that'll get it charging again! (last thing in the entire loop would be the main BCM, but i'm hoping it's not because my Celica needs a wideband as well )

Some numbers.
So I checked the voltage this morning with the car off - 11.7 (not great, I know - probably wasn't charged at all last night for the duration of my driving)
With the key on one turn: 11.5
With the key on two turns: 11.4
With the engine on 10.9
After about 10 seconds it started beeping at me franticly with messages of brakes being defective and also that there was a battery/alternator problem.
I've now removed the non-oe voltage regulator and will be calling my local MB dealer tomorrow to order an oe part, just to rule that portion out of the equation.

Great write-up on this. Did this today and went like a charm. I wasn't having any of the battery messages, but was getting dimming lights, rough idle, and O2 sensor lean codes. Changed out the voltage regulator with OE Bosch part, drove it around and smoother idle, no dimming, and no check engine lights.
Later tonight, started it up and backed out of the driveway and got the battery message, convenience features off. Turned the car off, turned it back on, and convenience features restored. Had dinner, came back out and had convenience features off/battery warning.
Thoughts? First guess is that I missed something during install, so I'll check that out tomorrow, but other thoughts?

Wanted to say thank you for this great write up. Did this on my 04 E320 earlier this week. No more pulsing lights, rough idle, and annoying "battery protection" messages.

I got it there, overnight shipping was only $4 more expensive than regular ground shipping (to my house at least).

w211 non AMG
I need to replace the voltage regulator on my 06 Mercedes e350. I tried to use this diy but it seems like on my vehicle there is much less room around the regulator. Has anyone completed this repair on a non AMG w211? My car has the same BOSCH alternator however it is jammed up close to the power steering arms and will make it tough to get a phillips or ratchet behind the alternator so that I can remove the regulator.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Since this was bumped, and I happen to have pulsing interior lights now, do you also need to disconnect the accessory battery up front before doing this?

no I didn't need to do anything with the accessory battery. I didn't bother and nothing happened, since you do have those mods and just for the process guarantee take the extra 5 min to remove the NEGATIVE CABLE on the accessory battery as well

I think my regulator just failed. Last time I drove the car I pulled in the garage and the headlights were flickering a bit. I got the low voltage, convenience disabled warning on the way home tonight. So, looks like time to swap out the regulator.
Wondering; how are you getting the battery voltage to display? I cannot figure that out.

Hello folks!
This is my first post here, so bear with me
I got my first MB back in Sept 2013. A CLS 55 AMG ;o)
About three weeks ago I have the red light warning message and turn out to be the alt because it was not charging (less than 12v). I replaced with a rebuild one from Autozone, but it died again three days after installed ;o(. I got it replaced under the warranty. Put in the new one and voltage is good (14+V).
However, driving the in the high way, it started rough idling and went off. NO red warning or nothing. Check the voltage and is around 13.80-14v. I turn on the engine again, and it started but again died after a few miles. I accelerate and can go only to 3K revolutions and start dying???
So my options are:
1. Replace the voltage reg
2. Replace the Aux Batt relay
3. Last, take it to a MB
FYI I have the flickering lights and when the alt died the first time I smell like a rare smell on the right side close to the alt. Can it be the ballast on the HID's.??
Any input on this endeavor will be greatly appreciated.
