Just picked up my 1st E55 yesterday!
Hey guys! I have joined the rank and file, and just picked up my first ever E55. 2004, Black, drove it all the way back from Chicago to Buffalo.
Wow what a great car!!
I am still learning all of the buttons and so forth, and really like the car so far.
Quick question:
What would cause a pulsing vibration at 72 mph? Its not real pronounced, but there. I am thinking a U joint or wheel bearing type issue. The car has just 70k on it, and everything seems pretty tip-top.
Anyone's thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

and the vibration might be something like tires or just alignment.
Hopefully not serious, i doubt it will be. Is there a warranty?

I was thinking also possibly wheel balance, but it doesn't get worse as speed increases, just creeps in around 72 and is gone by 80mph.
I bought it from a dealer in north Chiacgo, and have been looking into extended service contracts. Can anyone recommend one?

Fidelity seems good, fast approval and good coverage, but pricey with high miles. and have you tried putting it in manual and seeing if it occurs in 3rd and 4th @ 75-80?

Hmm no I haven't, not a bad idea though. It feels driveline and speed related, but forcing it to stay in a lower gear at that speed might rule out anything rpm related.

worth a shot at least.... these cars do weird things.. I got a 'BRAKE! VISIT Workshop!' light today, restarted the car and haven't seen it since. airmatic is unpredictable too. lol

Speaking of the manual shift - although extremely cool, I haven't yet found a scenario where the auto in Sport mode doesn't handle gear selection just fine on its own!

Is this the ECU reset you speak of?
Supposedly, the following procedure works with any "drive by wire" vehicle _without_ having to disconnect the battery:
1. Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.
2. Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.
3. Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
4. Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.
Is this all there is to it?
I have also read not to touch the windows, open a door, nothing for a few minutes...

Awesomeness. I will try it based on just having a "clean slate" if you will to unlearn poor driving habits it may have learned from its two prior owners.

chances are, the TCU has been reset 1-3 times max by dealer during service since 2004... The car should drive like its stolen without even breaking a sweat, or a window..
But let us know how it works out.

Indeed I will do it tomorrow first thing. I am now reading the manual (gasp!) to learn what all the gizmos do, and how to properly use them.
Interestingly enough, it says "Traction control brakes a spinning wheel, even when the ESP is deactivated."
Not that I intend to kill a set of tires doing a smokey burnout, but if I choose to spin 'em a little, I don't want the rear brakes interfering! lol

This was a brake stance and I slowly let off the brake to go through the intersection. ESP was off and minding it's damn business like I wanted it to so enjoy when the tires are ready to be changed out
Enjoy your beast in good health and welcome!

That's really sweet! I was just quoting the owner's manual because I was surprised. With ESP - ON - I have been having "trouble" leaving the toll booth all the way to 40 mph....lol!!!
