Just getting back from a trip, and want to get the beast on the road! Read few threads... have few questions... input would be great. I completely raped search function, worry not LOL

1. How to remove fan shroud? Solved****

2. How do you space shims, do I need new ones? If I need new ones any part numbers?

3. Center bolt is tightened to 40ft lbs or other? I have read 1-2 different numbers...

4. some people mention using strap wrench and breaker bar... or is impact the best way to get the ***** loose?

Use an impact wrench to remove the bolt. Put the air up to 120psi while tightening the bolt. You need feeler gauges to shim the clutch to spec. But since you probably don't have any extra shims just put all the ones that came off the car back on.

 

I thought people were recommending that you remove one shim as long as it didn't rub?

 

Ensure its clearance is between .35-.45mm/~.014-.018”. Toward the minimum is preferred.

Torque the bolt to 60Nm/44ft-lbs.

Got the bolt off using impact... I dont see it how it would be possible with a breaker bar and strap wrench.

Where are these shims? I dont see them on the pulley?????

How the F does the bearing come out? What grease to use when putting the bearing into the new clutch?

 

Done! BIG BIG BIG thanks to Shardul, he pretty much guided me step by step through the process!

I used the DIY Supercharger Clutch install by BrainS

Few things to add: Shroud comes off by removing the bolts ontop of the center rad support, unclip the clips hold the shroud to the rad, and shroud will come off fairly easy.


Center bolt is 24mm. Using a breaker bar, and strap wrench is near impossible, but I am sure it can be done. After screwing around for 45mins, I gave up. It took about 200psi using an impact gun to get that center bolt loose. I think heating it could have made it easier...

To take out the bearing, use c clip pliers and remove c clip, than use a 36mm socket, NOT 26mm to hammer out bearing. Use a vice to hold the pulley so the bearing will come out easy. (continuous tapping needed on dead center of the 36mm socket) reverse steps for install.

Use locktite on center bolt, tighten to 60nm or about 90ish psi... As per locktite instruction is takes 24hours to fully cure.

Install sc belt

Install shroud, make sure to plug it in, install all bolts and you are set!

 

Props on getting er done, I can't even change D2s bulbs by myself ahhaha

Didn't drive her thought I let locktite set in. About to find out in about a hour how it feels

 

My trip around the block to test the car ended up into a 2hour drive LOL

Anyways, the clutch is super smooth! No chirp! DIY! I have that silly smirk on my face again haha Damnnnnn my old clutch was so garbage I forgot this is how the car was suppose to feel lol...

Something I noticed today... Their seems to be a slight lag/delay in the sc clutch engagement on mashing the throttle. Never had this before. Is this clutch no good?

Noticed some belt slippage as well, will be swapping with new belt. Going to try ecu reset as well...

 

Anyone?

 

How do you know then belt is slipping?

I'll be honest, I kinda feel a slight delay in clutch activation as well. Although I'm not sure if the delay is actually the ECU's torque management retarding timing to make the sudden surge of power feel less of an impact.

 

I had this even when I replaced the entire clutch - its even worse now with the 175mm installed - I would also like to get to the bottom of what causes it as it doesn't feel completely right.

 

Even the pedal feels different... My old clutch felt like as if I was using a sprint booster or something. Engagement was more violent and felt like boost came on asap.

 

Update... installed 2 more shims, making the spacing tolerance to .40mm (should be between .35mm and .45mm). Now she runs perfect! Cant believe such a small thing would make a night and day difference.
