Use 0W40 on top of 5W40?
Hey all,
My E63 has 5W40 in it right now and I need to top off with about a quart. Rather than go to the dealer every time to do that, what can I use as an alternative?
My SA suggested 0W40, but I've never heard of someone in that position suggesting anything other than an "approved" product.
Thanks!

Like E55Dimon already mentioned, you be fine with topping off the oil. I use Mobil 1 0W40 exclusively. One day when I was on my home from my mom's house in NJ, I got the check oil at next refueling idiot notice on the display. Well, I couldn't find Mobil 1 0W40, so I used Mobil 1 5W30 instead. In a pinch try to use the same brand oil. But in dire straights use whatever is available, regardless of brand. It's better to have oil, than no oil in the engine.

Mercedes has just revised their approved oil list.
And for the record the E63 can use either Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40
Engine Type: M156
MB Approved Number: 229.5* or 229.51
Approved Oil viscoisty Range: 0W-40, 5W-40
*156 engine using 229.5 should use only SAE 0W-40 oil
List of Mercedes-Benz Approved Synthetic Engine Oil (2005-2009 Models):

Generally, Mobil 5W40 is for diesel engines, not gasoline.
There is a difference between 229.5 and 229.51. The 51 is not a subset of 5, it's a different standard. Just because the oil meets 229.51 does not mean it also meets 229.5.
The M156 is listed as compatible with both, but it one of the few AMG engines that is. I would stick with 0W40 for any AMG or gasoline Mercedes, unless specifically recommended otherwise.

Add the 0W40 and at next oil change, try to switch.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is an advanced performance synthetic motor oil designed to help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems in diesel powered automobiles that require oil that is approved against Mercedes-Benz MB 229.51 or MB 229.31specifications. Benefits of Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40:
Approved against MB 229.51
Approved against MB 229.31

Ditto, never use the ESP (diesel only). Mobil1 5W40 Formula M (meets 229.3 and 229.5) should be fine but it's hard to find in quarts. The last dealer oil change I had that is what they used and I was able to order a case of 6 from AVLubricants in Ohio.

If you look at Mobil 1's website you'll see that the 0W40 has more phosphorus ppm than the 5W40. Phosphorus is the protection additive in Mobil 1 syn oils. But too much phosphorus can destroy the cats over time. So supposedly it was kind of a balancing act between emission system protection and engine protection, hence the 5W40 or the 0W40 as being okay.
Either seems to be fine for the M156, but I'm staying with 0W40 under 229.5.

Except shipping can be high depending on where you are, like $14 a case here in CA (the place is in CA.) But it's the cheapest price I could find....
Never mind. If Kragan's sells it for $4 then go there. But I've never seen it (0W-40 Euro) on any shelf anywhere for that price. That's pretty amazing....

It's $8 a quart here at local OSH Hardware stores. But OSH is CA only. Last time I bought a quart there it was $7.75. But the 0W-40 isn't always on the shelf all the time. I guess people buy it up.

Depends on what climate you live in. If it never gets below 50 degrees where you live you can use a different weight. Temps here >> http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/o...tedDocId=10119
