OP didn't mantion that the P-car would be his only car and if that's true then it's a no brainer to have a performance sedan as the only car.
However,if he has another backup car and is driving E63 as a DD and wants something fun,then look no further and get the TT.

Wife drives a loaded '07 530i and we also have an LX70 so it wasn't difficult for me to sell my E55 and get a TT

Btw we are not talking about E63 vs 996 TT as they are totally different cars for different people with different intended purpose.

I have to agree, if it is your DD, I would pass or plan on getting a beater. I will keep my 330i and the wifes Lexus for daily duties.

Sticking with the E63. I see no advantage to a 996 at this time. I wanted the "sleeper" effect and a 996TT is far from my original goal. I need to take a chill-pill and just enjoy what I have.

I have owned a pretty heavily modded 996TT (2003) 6 speed and still have a 2007 997TT (modded, bought new).

The 996 was raw with less amenities inside. I did not use it as a daily driver partially due to comfort but also because of the "rowing" aspect in the Orange County- traffic.

The 997 is not a daily driver but I often find myself when opening the garage picking it over and over again to drive even with the other options I have. Its comfortable- fast and just has a nicer interior with more amenities. I have a W212 E63 and although its much slower than the GTR and 997TT I still can appreciate it from the standpoint of its intentions: a luxury sedan that goes faster than almost all other sedans out there.

In short from a previous and current owner; Id keep the E63 over the 996 but not over the 997.

So in terms of performance is the 996TT and 997TT pretty close? Or is it more of a comfort thing?

My 996TT had modded turbos plus exhaust, ecu, and several other minor tweaks. It was fast but my 997TT with almost every mod but turbos is still faster if memory serves me correctly (I dumped the 996 in 2006). Stock vs stock is no comparo, the 997 is faster.

The 996 can exceed the 997 in performance but you need to do a lot of mods (which many have and are still doing).

I'd also add that the 997 has better build quality (PAG is a lot more flush than it was 10 years ago) and better amenities plus a way nicer interior. Plus the safety features on a newer car.

And I could never stomach those egg yolk headlamps on the 996. The 997 is nicely sculpted to look more like a true 911 (it looks closer to a 993 now.)

Yeah,but for the money you can't beat the 996TT... With bigger turbos,exhaust,intake and a good tune these cars are easily putting down 550+ at the wheels and yet you are under $60,000.
Yes 997TT is and should be better then the 996 TT but isn't that always the case with any newer model You still have to plunk down $85,000 for an '07 which is quite a bit more then a nicely tuned/moded 996 TT.
If i have the money i would immediatly dump my 997 TT and get a GT2RS

Keeping the E63...I had a "guy moment" looking at the 996TT and drooling, but remembered that I hated my Corvettes. I prefer the sleeper sedan thing. I don't want something that attracts a bunch of attention. My E63 is pretty low-key. Nothing fancy...just a big silver car:-)

The outside of a 997 is definately better than the 996.However i am not too sure about the interior though. In my opnion the 997 interior looks more like a sedan than a sports car.

I think both the 996 and 997 interiors are kind of bad. The interior of the 993 is perfect, imho. Spartan and clean with only what's needed for driving (but with a stereo and A/C, of course )

But the 997 does have the amenities that people want these days. The problem with the 996 was the material cost cutting and the fit and finish. Things were much improved with the 997. The 993 was still built at an individual work station and assembled by hand (all the panels, etc., were stamped obviously but still needed to be fitted.)
