Engine oil pump for me as well from day one. Oil viscosity plays a big role and a cold start is the worst.

I believe this video explains it all. Certainly seems like the trans pump making this noise on cold start up?

so you're thinking the timing of the sputter with the sound is the trans pump?

I have that same sound, but the dealer said it was my injection pump

Hate to go into an old thread but thought it would be important for some guys. My oil pump whine has been there forever and I just cut it down to almost nothing. I always thought there had to be someone that makes a high flow stainless oil filter and I found that a company called Pure Power and got a MAJORE education on oil and filters. So I bought a new stainless filter and bam.....oil pump whine down to almost nothing after all this time. I new it had to be something in the filter area because my K@N filters would calapse completely in the center and the noise would get louder. Switched to the Mann filters and no more problem with that but whine still there. Pure Power claims a 5-7 psi improvement in oil pressure and I believe it. It will also filter down to 1/25000 of an inch so that's good to. Forgot also there are magnets built in the cage to boot as well. Hope this helps!!

What part number are you using. I couldn't find any for the E55 on their site.

No its a life time oil filter just wash it out . There is no listing...call and ask for Kelly and they are around 200.00 which is pricey but worth it only if your looking for something like this.

So this replaces the oil filter on the stalk or did I misunderstand your explanation?

This is a drop in replacement stainless steel oil filter. Slide out your old filter and drop in the new one.

No problem !!! Also you can do a flow test ...so to speak like I did. Pour oil over the side of the stainless filter and it flows right through. Do it to the factory filter and it will not do that. Give it a shot of carb clean...blasts right through it. Mann filter it will not.

What process do you use to clean the filter? Would love to pick 1 up for new motor.

Things to know after my purchase:

1. It did reduce the cold start whine - only slightly but noticeable.
2. They suggest you clean it FOUR-TIMES-A-YEAR
3. Filters out to 1/25000 - inch
4. Due to that it is likely clogged after the first few hours of use. (just a theory of mine)
5. $200.00 will buy you 20 MANN oil filters......

This has been my experience. Picked up my car a couple of weeks ago, It had been pretty much in storage for 7 years so i had all the fluids changed straight away. After replacing the oil with a 0W-40 there's a noticeable whine when starting the car cold. seems to die off as the engine warms. was a bit concerned till i found this thread.

apologies for quoting a 6yo post

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this engine/tranny whine belongs on Unsolved Mysteries...

I have so many questions about this video. What is he doing? Is he bleeding the tranny? How? I really want my whine gone.

I hear the whine from the front of the oil pan on my 05 E55, I can assure its coming from the pan, placed my hand on the pan and I can feel the buzzing.
Heard the sound on idle, Seems to go away after a little bit or when revving up the car.

Nope, that is for sure NOT the noise. That sounds like a pulley or water pump.
