63 cam adjusters gone bad again

I heard a knocking/rattling sound during cold start ups. The dealer fixed all 4 cam adjusters. I've only driven the car 1200 miles and it's doing the same thing. Bad cam adjusters. What would cause for this to happen again after it's already been fixed? Any input is appreciated!

Hope they did the job right. Maybe check the C63 forums. I've seen a few posts there about cam adjuster issues. How many miles on the motor altogether?

Not to scare you but here's from a post from a MB Tech who's on here once in a while:

Only amg enigne failures ive seen are improper repair/assembly (I've ony seen one factory built motor fail, a 63amg motor that failed due to a incorrectly installed cam adjuster- im sure "hans" got his *** chewed for that 80$k for longblock), hydro-locking- look geman engineers made my car clearly it can float too, maint. neglect

The sound only lasts for about 3 seconds upon start than goes away. I know that there are ticking sounds from the lifters but that's somewhat normal on these engines. The rattling/clanking sound is extremly loud once at start up. Again the sound comes and goes. It for sure is a cam adjuster issue but it doesn't make sense for this to happen again.

I don't get it.... what is making some cars have problems with cam adjusters while others have no problem whatsoever?

I would venture to say it's partly because they are hand built and don't have the consisitency of automated assembly.

Was the noise consistent? Mine was not, it took the dealer three separate visits to finally figure it out. Basically, I told them to keep the car and start it up every hour until the rattle occurs.

The second time it occurred it was constant. The dealer immediately heard the sound and has reported this to Mercedes Benz. They are awaiting on what to do about this.

Got the car back from the dealer, they couldnt re create the sound for 2 full weeks. The night i got it back i was able to re create it. But 5 days after the day i got it back i havent heard a thing. I dont get it :/ could this be a lifter issue instead of a cam adjuster? Improper install?

My rattle which was a result of a camshaft adjuster issue was intermittent. Damn, 2 full weeks, did the dealer put any dings or scratches on your car? Anyways, how many cold starts did they perform within those two weeks? I had my car at the dealer on two separate visits before finally detecting it on the third visit. On the third visit, because the rattle was intermitttent, I specifically told my SA and shop foreman to start the car every hour and to have a 2nd tech outside of the vehicle with the hood open to observe the sound. The shop floor is very loud and the rattle could potentially be undetected.

Ahhh hell, I get that noise on cold start up every so often...I was starting to think my top end was just oil starved when cold...

The dealer just changed the oil to another type and the engine runs much better and smoother! All is well and fixed. I hope!

They started the car up every 4 hours through out the day and also started it up during cold starts during the next morning. My car was in the other side of the shop were it was nice an quite and no noise.

Ticking on cold start up, count me on that list. But no problems after it's warmed up. Dealer didn't notice it and they know my car pretty well.

I know this thread is a little old but my motor started making this noise last month...it's freaking scary loud...primarily on warm starts...not cold and not hot. Took it to the dealership and they said it was the cam adjuster. I have a NAC warranty and they won't fix it because "it's just making noise and not broke." Anybody else have this problem and what was the fix? The above post says they changed the oil and all is better. Is this still true a year later? Thanks for any help in advance, John

Does your car have oil pressure immediately upon startup? One possibility is, there's a little plastic check valve that keeps the oil feed to your filter from draining back into the pan every time you shut the car off. If it were to bleed down, your oil system would have to reprime itself every time you start it, and the phasers are hydraulic.

Guys never take this issue lightly. When VVT camgears want to explode, they can take a lot of the surrounding metal with it...this is what happened on my Celica 3 years ago:

And believe it or not, this happened at IDLE!

I'd hate for something like that to happen to an AMG motor.

dacls63amg or anyone else with the same problem.
I have recently had the same issue come up on my car(clk63,2007 model). I get that ugly noise on startup but it never happens on a cold start... Also it doesn't always happen, there are times when I turn on the car and it doesn't make any noise. I have taken it to mercedes and they think it's the doublecamshaft... I don't have a warranty left on the car as it's from 2007 and I only have 87,000km on the clock. So I am wondering what my options are and also to know roughly how much fixing it would cost. (I live in Spain).

Any thoughts anyone? would really appreciate it.

Thx

I am not sure about the brand but the car went through its major service recently so I think may be about 1000km max on the new oil. I will check for the brand.

The other important point I forgot to mention is that the noise seems to come from the left hand side of the car or the left hand side of the engine, and not central where the engine is placed.

Thx a lot
