Thinking about shooting my grill with Plastidip this weekend

Having only painted a few times in my life, how accurate do you have to be with this stuff? Or rather, how succeptible is it to runs and how many coats should be used?

Also, what I'm seeing gives a flat black look. Can you get a gloss with this stuff?

Finally, should the grill be disassembled for best results?

just did my rims and grille(s) this weekend! the stuff is VERY forgiving. doesnt really run at all. and you can actually peel it off clean when it's dried if you mess it up. so go crazy and see how the stuff reacts, if you mess up just wait til it dries, peel it off and try again. i did about 5-6 solid coats for my front grille. i didn't disassemble it, just washed and wiped it down. this is a rubberized coating spray, so you will have a flat black look, unless maybe u clear coat? i dont know i wanted matte black so i didnt look into that. hope this helps.

It is awesome stuff. I just painted my drag rims and be patient, progress is slow when applying the dip.

+1 I did the spray on my badges and it was cake. I've been itching to do the grille and hood vents.

My grill is done with it. I did 4 coats and it looks good. It has sort of a wrinkle look to it and is a flat black color. I just took the grill off and layed it on a box and sprayed light coats with about 10-15 minutes between each.

i have been thinking the same about trying to get a gloss with this and think would just need to experiment with laying some clear over it... i would think the plastic surface would have enough traction for the clear coat to stick, but guess i will have to try it out first....

If it doesnt work, the plastic coat should peel off though and then i would have to go the normal sand, prime, paint, clear to get the gloss black .

I just did mine last night. 3 coats and it looks great.

Also, when installing this or any other grill, be sure to align the tab that pops out when you open the hood properly, otherwise you might end up like I did with a broken slat on your grill.

Did my grill over the summer and still looks great... they just came out with plastidip gloss too so you can go over the plastidip with it. Also i might want to take it off and go with the stock look again. For 6 bucks you cant go wrong with this stuff.

i think the main appeal is the you can do no prep or crappy prep and 1 coat and it will come out the same everytime in 1/10th time it takes you to prep and layer multiple coats of regular paint and clear and then polish it out.

plus with plasti dip if you dont like it you just peel it of and go back to original while with regular paint, once you sand it and paint it, you better like it or your gonna have to but a new grill if you want to go back.

that being said i painted mine the normal paint/clear coat way and love it but it did take 24hr with all the prep and dry time between coats and curing and then wet sanding, polish buff wax buff... but i wanted gloss and at the time plasti-dip was only flat ... if they had this new gloss enhancer i would of tried it first and if i didnt like it i could peel it off and do regular paint

Im thinking about using this stuff for my grille and badges. I like the idea of how easy it is and the fact it is so flexible which means chip resistant. I can't tell you how many times I have painted grilles because after about a year going through temp changes, sun, and high way driving. This seems like an easy DIY. Like Gaspam said... paint takes a long time if done right.
