I had this same issue recently. Dealer replaced the left side fuel sending unit and the entire gas tank, thankfully 100% under my extended warranty.
Issue fixed!
Hope this helps.

this is most likely the fuel sending unit on the driver's (left) side and it should be a known problem to most dealers in warmer climates. the plastic on the sending unit fails and separates enough at first to only allow fumes to escape but not enough to allow fluid to pass. the separation will be too small to catch by simple visible inspection. replace the fuel sending unit and allow the saturated padding and seats to air out thoroughly (or get them replaced under warranty) and you should be good.

replace it yourself. you'll need a new sending unit and two screw clamp gaskets (one for each side because you'll have to open the pump side also) and basic hand tools.

I will look into how to replace it myself. Why didn't I think of that
You got to work with me here. Its my first Euro car lol

with basic mechanic skills you should be able to do it by yourself in less than two hours...and that's if you take your time. it'll probably take you less than an hour if you ever have to do it again!

I started getting the horrid smell of gas about 2 weeks ago. At first it was faint, but as of about a week ago, it was there in full force. My E55 had a pool of fuel in the passenger side sender unit. I just called local MB dealership and they are telling me to bring it in today. I soaked up all the fuel I could in there, but did snap off about 10 shots at all angles so the dealership could see. So, I'm off to see if they'll make this right.

Well, MB of Sacramento would not do anything without charging their rape fees. I clearly explained on the phone with them that it was a recall item and that I wasn't willing to pay anything and the SA told me no problem since it was a recall item. Of course when I got there and spoke with the SA they assigned me to, he said no, this recall is closed and we have to charge you. I even told him repeatedly that it has a sticker from MB under the hood that says when it was taken in by the previous owner for inspection of the recall, the tech stated on the sticker it was inspected and to replace if necessary sighting the campaign number and a dealer code. So, I will be calling MB Corporate tomorrow to get this straightened out.

Just had my wife's '08 E350 in for fuel smell. They replaced the fuel sending unit seal. About 4 months ago, they had replaced the fuel pump after it failed. Wonder how long this fix will last... Seems as though 3 years and 30k miles is a bit early for a seal to fail at the rate they are failing all over.

well my car has had the gas smell for a few weeks now. i finally took the seats out and pulled the caps off... found a little bit of fuel on top of the fuel pump... started the car up, watched the pump, no more fuel came out... is it usually the fuel sender unit that causes this?
here are some pics

i actually notice the smell constantly, doesnt matter how much gas is in the tank... it seems like it actually gets worse when the tank is about 1/4 full

Never see any gas on the pavement or garage floor.
Hope the fuking thing doesn't explode.

I will file a complaint if my stealer doesn't fix this fuking smell. It is over the top bad and must be a hazard, especially if I drive into a gas station on a hot day where everyone is either smoking or leaving their engine running (with AC blowing) because of the extreme heat.
Finally kudos go to my dumb as$ service advisor when I called to get the car in for the problem. He told me it was probably okay to just keep driving the car until next week. That service advisor is a complete moron/douche bag (generic insult).

I got the E63 back from the dealer last night. It went in for a failed tank sending unit. It had the gasoline odor after fill up, very noticable in the garage. The dealer replaced both sending units because both had bad seals in addition to the one bad level transmitter.
I filled it up on the way home, parked it in the garage overnight, no more gasoline odor!
The work was 100% covered by the MB extended warranty.

The car was at the dealer overnight. They also replaced a control unit for the trunk lid. Nothing else was replaced related to the fuel system.
