Merc S55 AMG Kompressor 2003 & S320 1999
Hi All. I have problem another version/variation of the Fuel Smell Problem. My tank at one stage pertly collapsed (Vacuum problem I recon) and it sprang a crack leak mid way up. It causes the fuel to leak in the boot tire well and downwards. I Firstly "Pumped" the tank backup so to speak and eventually managed to seal it with a high quality Fibreglass sealant, but also created a catch drain in case it would leak again avoiding it to leak in the boot tire well but via the catch and a drain pipe to below the car. (Still in place) However it still smells of fuel in the car when you open it in the morning or when it stood for a few hours and indeed it is worst when it hot (I am in South Africa) but I have notice it only smells when the tank is filled between half way down and empty. (When full it is not smelling) It definitely does not leak from the sealed crack into the catch drain. 2 minutes driving and the smell disappears. I sealed the level indicator unit with silicone completely. I can only see another electric devise on top of the tank. Has anybody has similar experiences and perhaps suggestions to a cause and even better a solution. 2003 Mercedes S55 AMG Compressor.

I sealed mine with JB weld, then found out you are supposed to change the pumps every 60k anyway. It was a waste of time.

2003 CLK500
I experienced the same/similar issue with my '03 CLK500. In my car it triggered the check engine light (not sure if anyone also saw the Check Engine Light (CEL) come on and tried to decode). CEL was intermittent for a while and it would clear itself. After a great deal of time and detective work, a smoke test of the fuel filler neck showed where the leak was. Smoke poured out and showed a leaking fuel filler neck.
Unfortunately, this is a hard item to remove/replace and it is over $520. It comes as one assembly (here is the part No: W0133-2075480 ). Aside from the smell, this is a hazard and should not be left unaddressed. Eventually the Check Engine light will get you.
I have over 120K miles on my car and this has been the only substantial repair it has needed outside warrant. Generally a bullet proof car.
Cheers,
MO

Gas smell

Have you checked under back seats to see if your fuel pump and fuel sending unit seals are leaking? There's a video on YouTube that shows replacement of these seals resolving the infamous gas smell inside.

Guys I need your input on this one....I've searched the forums, but can not find a post with my exact issue. Here it goes.... Only when the out side temps are above 100 degrees and lots of stop/go driving I begin to smell fuel in side the cabin. As well, the tank can be at any level. It seems to be strongest on the passenger rear (near the rear headrest). I checked the pumps under the rear seats (removed covers) while the smell of gas was very strong in the cabin....but not a whiff of gas smell coming from either pump units. As well each was bone dry, and no sign of past leakage. The car did have the recall completed in '08. As well, I can smell fuel form the outside of the passenger/rear wheel well. I did a quick look underneath the car and again no signs of anything leaking. Is there anything else I can look at, possibly behind the rear seats? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Recap:
- Gas smell is present only when the temp outside is 100 or above and lots of stop and go driving

- Smell can happen when the gas tank is full or almost empty this does not matter

- Checked both pumps under the rear seat, no smell or sign of fuel leaking

- Can smell outside of the car as well, from rear passenger wheel well.

why don't you take it back in to the dealer? it's a warranty (not a recall) for 15 years. See if they will cover it....

Gas Smell

You need to first check both the fuel pump and fuel sending unit seals underneath the rear passenger seat to see if its leaking. What you would have to replace if it is indeed leaking is either the seal or the complete part/s all together.

I check with my dealer at home; frist i have to check the filler neck (most of the time is that piece crack on most of W211) second if its not smell at the filler neck, i have to check down the rear seat near the 2 cover, remove and check if some leak gas.

I will take my car from winter storage in the second week of april and i will give us the result.
thanks evrybody Jacques (jacqueslev@videotron.ca)
