I'm curious about something, it started after deciding to buy a W220 S Class for a person I know and for some reason I actually fell in love the look of the thing, it has this classic Mercedes styling about it, very expensive looking and very luxury (only if the paint is good, the wheels are right and in good condition) plus they're quite cheap now so you could pick one up for a great price.

I just want to get an opinion on the looks and the interior compared with the W211, NOT performance or speed. Now we'll use the E63 interior and exterior because that is the pinnacle of the W211 styling. Take a look at these shots and tell me what do YOU think is better, purely aesthetically.

So guys what do you think? I personally feel the AMG E Class looks more sporty and the S Class looks more "posh" and luxurious, I personally can't decide which looks better.

Not a fan of the S either. Only car I like in the huge honkin' sedan category is the Audi S8.

I think the W211's interior is better looking by far, which makes sense since their production runs are 3 years apart from each other, the W211 being the newer model. The W221 on the other hand has a fantastic interior that makes the W220's look very dated. The W212's looks fantastic as well but I feel the W211's has held up well.

Exterior wise, the S-class is just too big for my like.

New S has been around for so long, I think the public (average Joe that doesn't know Benz) can tell that is the old OLD version.

Not that many newer E's running around yet so the bug eyes still can look great for another year or so.

Just coming at it from a public angle. If that doesn't matter to you, then I would go S. Love my E, but it's so darn cramped back seats. Hard for clients etc.

Never like the W220 I rather W140 box looking. W220 just looks like a extension longer W211. Sometimes in freeway I kinda confuse S or E until got closer look. Ofcourse I like the new S W221 better. If you really want W220, get AMG S55 or S600 with AMG look and 2004+

I haven't been in a E lately but I have a pretty good idea of what a W211 looks like inside. The W220 is far less intimate in terms of appearance, the layout is a bit simple compared to the newer W211. But I would take a leather covered S600/65 dash over a W211 any day. I wouldn't ever step into a pre-facelift W211, the steering wheel personally, looks way to fugly.
Looking at the exterior, the appearance of the E63 would be hard for me to choose over a 2003- S55/600/65.

and plus I like to see the buttons and knobs, the S class kind of lacks those...
like the E much more

You can probably get a new body S for about the same price you'd be spending on a W211 63...

Cheaper...lol. I've seen 07+ S classes go for mid to high 30's here. I have yet to see an E63 go for less than $40 here.

I never liked the old S body styles, but if you might go with the new one's then definitely over the E. The new S's interior and exterior look amazing imo.

+1 if you just want an S class, the 07+ is pretty hard to beat. If you want AMG then E55 or 63 is the way to go... of course if you're spending $100k, then S65 is the way to go lol

W221 looks better than both 211 and 212 but way too expensive for its performance. W220 is just close to the bottom of the worse MB ever built. I would buy the W221 S65AMG vs W212 63AMG NA. As of right now I'm going to wait for the 2012 S212 E63 biturbo.

I'm with him on that. The slightly newer dated S class is perfect. I would also say that a 2009 CL has the same nice interior as well.I wish my E63 had this interior styling.

Well, just to tally one up for the W220 team - you'd be surprised at how many compliments the W220's still get. I think a nicely styled W220, like with the sport kit, or better yet an AMG - looks better than a W211. Have you ever seen a W220 S65 up close? It's very impressive, huge brakes and very nice wheels. But even a nice S500 with the sport package looks great, and I think it's better looking than an simple E.

The E63 does look great, though. I think it is a bit more jazzed up than the E55, which is more of a sleeper. Overall though, the W220 still looks very modern - I don't think it is outdated. Most people probably won't be able to tell that it is an older model, in fact to the laymen it is very similar to the W211 save the size difference.

I own one of each, they are very different cars. The W220 is a large luxury sedan where the E63 is a tight intermediate performance sedan. Each has an acceptable exterior and interior styling treatment, but as we know, opinions can vary. The one feature I use on the E not on the S is the fold down rear seat. If I could only have one Mercedes it would probably be the E. I did look into an E65, they are available from Brabus, but it is cheaper to just own one of each as I do now. It is irritating how Mercedes is de-contenting the 212 compared to the 211. The front ABC is gone so I cannot raise the 212 to get it in the driveway w/o scraping, the automatic rear headrests were deleted and some other small interior details were cheapened compared to the 211 E63. The new engine sounds interesting, looking forward to driving one.

Since you're deciding between the old S class and w211 E63. Easy choice, E63 ftw... I actually thought you were comparing with the S550. I would chose that all day every day.

^^^ I haven't decided between any of them, my E55 is here to stay for a bit, the S Class I'm buying for a friend but like I said in the OP, the W220 S Class has this "thing" to it, it's hard to explain but for people who don't know Mercedes, the W220 always seems to get complements. I've had people tell me my W211 is "ugly" "old looking" "Asian styling" THEY ARE IDIOTS however, the fact remains that for people who don't know about these cars looks seem the only thing that they look at.

I'm surprised (maybe not, it is a W211 forum ) that people here have put down the W220 that much, even calling it near the bottom of the Mercedes ladder. Are you serious? Have you seen how many world dictators roll in those, and I'm not talking about the W221, I'm talking about the W220, it has this presence. Not that I listen to the young culture of rap or admire any of the artists, have you seen the amount of rap videos have the W220 in it? My son says it's a "gangsters" car, and while he is only 8 I do understand where he's coming from. Performance wise, yes the W211 eats it but I was talking about looks and charisma and as much as I love my W211 I gotta say the W220 still holds a classic look and an "aura" with people.

For me I think only the S can be parked outside a building at nice and look sinister when compared to the E, it's not sporty but that's not the point. Now I did say looks in the original post, so think of it this way, would you ever see a world leader or an important person getting chauffeured in an E63 AMG? It would look silly, the reason is the car is too sporty, more of a young age car, I mean quad exhausts, lip spoiler etc etc. I think most of you didn't get how the question was asked and took it in a different way.

I voted for the S class not knowing it was a220. I thought it was the 221. I owned a 220 and have to admit it was one of the worse cars that I have ever owned. You name it and it broke; that model holds a very high place in the Mercedes Hall of Shame.
