I looked at a bunch uf used TC3500's, and like you found virtually all of them to be in very rough condition. As my Hunter service rep explained it to me, the techs in shops and dealers don't give much of a crap about equipment they don't own; they're just interested in getting the job done as quickly as possible so the equipment gets abused and only minimally maintained correctly. Used TC3500's seem to be in the $2,500 to $3,500 price range, but most you'll find will need some rehab. The machine I got was only just over 3 years old, and came out of a shop, but I had to spend some time cleaning it and replacing a few parts on it to bring it up to the level I wanted it at. With careful shopping, you could pick up a decent changer and balancer in the $4K to $6K range. And yeah, I get the "economics" part of it - you can buy a sh*tload of tire mounts and balances for that kind of cash. But it's like any other aspect of the fine automobile hobby aspect - the value of DIY, and knowing it's been done right, as well as the convenience, makes it all worth it.

I saw one of these things in action this morning, and let me tell you, it made light work of getting my 215/35-18 KDW2's on a 8.5" rim. Off course the expertise of the operator also makes a difference.

my biggest "peeve" is out of balance tires...I hate any vibration...period. I would pay double to have it done correctly. I wish I had my own balancer...Oh, the things i would do with it
