Question What to look for, high mileage 2006 E55/ Who's was it?

Looking at an 06 E55 at MB Westmont, IL. It has just over 90k miles but has been serviced at that dealer from day one. What are the things I should check into for an E55 with 90k miles?

Also did this car belong to anyone on MBWorld? I'd be interested in hearing from you.

John

As I don't have a E55, but I would check the valve covers for oil leaks. Check to see the spark plugs were replaced, general fluid leaks. Check to see when the SC clutch bearings were replaced. Serpentine belts, I mean you have a C55, same engine with a SC.

Yes, I do have a C55 and I know a few things to look for but what I want is the E55 specific problem areas to look for in a car with 90k+ miles. I have been able to look at the CarFax report and the car was serviced exclusively at MB Westmont. I see that as a plus as my dealings with them have been great so far.

Why won't you pick up the one local at LakeBluff its a 2004 with 54k miles for 23,000. I looked into the car it had a prior accident which was not much at all and everything else on the car seems very well kept. The guy that has it for sale is in his 50s. I would rather get somethign with less miles than 2 years newer. 90K is a lot of miles for any car not alone a E55. Don't forget a warranty.

John,

As much as I would like to help you out, I've very little experienced with the E55, now the E63, or C63 and were good. But from reading all the problems with the E55, Intercooler pump failures seems to be big issue, besides the SuperCharger clutch, valve covers leaks. The tranny is bulletproof, so that's a plus. Heat seems to be the biggest issue. Oh, and the biggest pain in the butt would be the Airmatic struts and springs, if they fail, it's big money. Check to see if they have been replaced. Other then electronics, I cant comment on anything else. You need a E55 guy, and not a E63 guy like myself to answer these questions. But, I'm glad to help out.

Also check the idler pulleys and crank pulleys out, and the supercharger for leaks as well.

i would stay away from an 06 with 90k miles... especially for that price... that many miles, that car is worth $15k... you should be getting an 06 with 40k miles for mid 20's

Where??
I just shopped extensively and you might find '03 or '04 models for that price but not likely anything newer. Cars with over 100K miles are barely dipping below $20K so anything in the mid teens is going to be rough - I've seen them. You can get some nice deals especially if you want silver or black, but just not that nice.

I do agree that the price the OP listed is a tad high but I suspect the car needs nothing if on the MB lot.

I just paid $23.5 for an '06 with 75K miles but it's heavily optioned and exceptionally clean. Also had 19" wheels and a few other things that I would have done myself. It needed a tensioner, and two pulley bearings, and an alignment (about $300 and half a days work). Oh yeah, it's blue which is tough to find.

are you on crack ? $15k 06 90k miles ? even 03 still 100k miles still worth $18k+ If you find 06 with 40k miles for mid 20's must be salvage title.
My 06 has 87000 miles, own for almost 2.5 years, so far only Oil change + air filter + tranny flush, its been very reliable so far..... (knock on the wood)

his price of $37k was not realistic at all, thats why he dropped the price to a more reasonable level... so $27k is not far off. Just because he was originally asking $37k doesn't mean the car is worth that.... I can put up my 06 CLS55 for sale for $60k then drop the price to $45k a few weeks down the road, does that mean it's a great deal? no $45k is what i should have posted it at in the first place

Yes, its true $37k is not realistic price but $27k is still too low for low miles 06. (IMO)

i paid last Dec $25k for an 05 w/ 55k miles on it. Dealer wanted $32k, then $29k. I got them down to $25k. It had nav, xenons, dynamic seats, rear deflector, heated seats. 06 w/40k miles for mid $20s doesnt exist unless salvage or been in an accident.

I have seen the full service history on it. It's extensive but the only replacements have been pads and rotors. It is a very clean and healthy car but you just know you're in for some expense in repairs over the next couple of years just due to age and miles.

If the car was well taking care, the mileage is not a problem at all. Few parts are very common problems, engine mounts, seal valve, airmatic... no matter what mileage they all go bad. I remember someone changing engine mount at 40K miles and airmatic failure in 50k so the mileage doesn't affect much. (IMO) I think $25k for 06 silver with pano, good deal.
Good luck with your purchase.

i got my 06 e55 july 11th of this year with 47k miles for around 28k and i am enjoying every second of it, especially coming from an 07 nissan altima 2.5s that had 52k miles. one of the reasons i got this car was because my monthly payments on the nissan is the same as the benz. first owner was a lease and he used it for about 42k miles, then the next owner had it for 5k miles and traded it in for an escalade. my only issue is my driver side keyless entry doesnt work. so i need to replace the handle if i want to unlock the car just by touching the handle. good luck with your purchase.

That's a great deal.
Care to share the tactics to talk them down?

I actually was looking for a Toy Sequoai that they had and came upon the E55. It was the Sunday before Christmas when i saw the cars. Negotiated over email next few days and agreed to a price and showed up on Thursday to get the car.

My 4matic, different dealer wanted $42k and ended up getting it for $35k including CPO.

I test drove this car last week. It is a nice car but the price is too high for the miles. I am also in the market for an E55. Lovely cars.

I have an 04 E55 with 24,000 on the clock. Black on black. No issues. Needs nothing.

I'll sell it for 30k.
