I used to laugh at Hammer Worship until I did some deep reading on how much AMG was involved in the making of each and every Hammer that went out the door. These things are handcrafted incredible machines. (engine, tranny and handling I mean) We're talking about the AMG bigwigs even checking out the cars before they went out etc. It was amazing.
So much different than the stamped out cars we get today.

Correct and agreed.
FWIW..that is not a "Hammer". The Hammer nickname refers only to the W124 E-Class with the AMG 5.0L \ 5.4L or 6.0L engine and it was coined by Car and Driver in 1987 and the nickname stuck even in Europe..really it was known as the "Velvet Hammer". Due to the international recognition of the Original AMG Hammer and the success of E28 / E34 M5 prompted Mercedes to pursue Porsche and build the beautiful W124 500E.
This W126 SEC has the same engine as the original AMG Hammer. Also the car has led a pretty solid life on the track and has a welded in cage and is being sold by the original owner's widow. She has been mistakenly led to believe it is worth $50K when it probably worth about half that amount. The car has some neat parts on it though and that Craigslist ad is as awful as it gets.....

Technically, thats not a Hammer.
Hammers were technically only W124s, and at that, only models equipped with the 6.0 DOHC engine.
Like said before, these beasts were built in a time when cost was no object. I had the opportunity to pilot an early AMG, and it was sublime. You could feel the quality and craftmanship everywhere!
