Amazed all over again by the E63.
So my life with the E63 has seen ups and downs, and has been a roller coaster experience for sure. A few months ago I ended up giving the E63 to my wife to drive, due to her Evo IX not being what I considered to be big enough for our 2 year old daughter to ride in the back safely anymore. So her Evo was sold (to a dealer for only a few thousand less than we paid 5 YEARS AGO), and the E63 has taken over daily driver duty for her. Between daily use, and several trips back and forth to Canada (watch those miles pile on), I have hardly been in the car at all, and had kind of forgotten how cool it really is. Well, that all changed this past weekend.
So we were going to a wedding about 140 miles north of where we live, and were planning to drive my NSX, but at the last minute I decided that I really wanted to drive the E63 since I had not driven it in so long. I ran out and washed it, did some touch-ups with Meguiar's Quick Detailer, shined up the tires, and stopped to admire the car (since my wife does not exactly keep it detailed very often). I actually said outloud, 'Wow....this car is badass,' and smiled to myself. My car is a black on black with VERY dark windows, and when clean looks positively evil.
We hopped into the car and after getting on the highway noticed that for some reason the E63 hits it 'comfy' feeling around 90 - 100 mph. It is like you do not even notice the car is going that fast until you either look down at the speedometer, or realize that you are passing EVERYONE else on the road at a pretty decent clip. Either way, I love how this car just feels like it was carved from granite. It is almost impossible to describe how solid it feel unless you own one, or have driven one. Mercedes really did a damn good job when they made this car. A REALLY good job. The other thing is that, eventhough my car is stock, it get a LOT of looks. We had it parked and people were openly staring at it, and a teenage boy came over and was taking pictures of it. I am used to this with my NSX, but the E63 kind of caught me off guard since I just call it my 'big black sedan'. I guess other people realize it is special too.
But one of my favorite parts came from the drive home. I will say ahead, yes, I know I was speeding. Yes, I know it is wrong. So save your breath. I get it, and don't need a lecture or another father. We left to head home around 11:30 p.m. and really wanted to be home before 1 a.m., so I set my cruise at around 75 mph, and eased in to driving home. Now, usually I drive significantly faster than that, but was relaxed, and just settling in, so not hurry. Then my wife says (after about 20 miles), 'Why the hell are you driving so slowly? I would like to get home sometime today,' and soon after that is when 'they' passed me. A set of HID lights belonging to a new Saab flew past me like I was not moving, and about 2 second behind the Saab was a newer Honda Accord EX in hot pursuit. So I smiled and said, 'Okay...if you want to get home, here we go,' and I punched it to catch up with the two 'pigeons' (as I like to call them) to see how fast we were going to go on this journey. Evidently that number was 105 mph at this point. Luckily there seemed to be almost NO other cars on the road, so it was just the three of us for most of the trip. When other cars would come up, they would drop to 'only' 85 mph or so, and then speed back up after the 'fly-by' on the unsuspecting slow pokes.
Moving down the road at a healthy rate of speed I was instantly jealous of all of the people in Germany who an drive this fast, and faster, every day, without fear of speeding tickets. I had a smile on my face the entire time and just kept thinking how lucky and fortunate I am to own such an amazing car, and I even wondered to myself why I did not buy one of these much, much earlier. It is perfect. Stable at all speeds. The suspension going through long sweeping turns just settled in and felt perfect. It is comfortable for long trips and has more features, options, and doodads than any one person ever really needs. It has an engine with so much power on tap that your right foot twitches because it wants to mash the gas pedal through the floor board just to feel the rush, and you feel like you could impact the rotation of the Earth if you floored it enough times. Active Xenon HID lights that illuminate your path as you terrorize roadways of unsuspecting locales. Plus, I swear that this car was grinning at me when we finally got back home, and said, 'Hehehe. Your life will never be the same now....let's go for another drive,' which made me smile back. The drive home was perfect. Usually my speeds are only that high for short bursts, but this trip I was able to watch many miles fly by at high speeds and really appreciated what the engineers were able to accomplish with this car. They made the ultimate 4-wheeled Stealth Bomber for the highways. Enormously capable in terms of speed and handling, monster breaks, and all wrapped in a cleanly designed and stylish package. It is the way to make an impression, without being obnoxious.
Now the other part comes....after arriving home, giving my E63 a loving pat on the hood and a smile, I jumped on the Internet to look for a white one for myself. I have been considering a 996 Twin Turbo or 996 GT2 for some time, but now really think that an E63 of my own may be the better plan. Yes, that's right. I would like to have TWO E63s, and have begun the search. Oh poor bank account...you may take another hit in the name of AMG.

Nothing wrong what so ever with owning two AMGs. I have two AMGs myself, a 07 E63 and a 10 C63.
That is a great story, do you have anymore to share?

Thanks! I would love to have a CLS63 in the family, because then the wife could take that, and I could get the E63 back for me.

Agree about liking the W211 and not the W212. The only W212 E63 I like is Vic55's, because I'd like anything Vic55 bought as long as he promised he'd put cool **** on it. He could show up in an Iraqi T-82 tank and as long as he slapped a Vorsteiner spoiler on it I'd swear to you that it was the ****.

I too do not like the W212 E63, I love the aggressive look of the front end, but just can't wrap my hands around the rear end. And the quality of the interior materials seem to be lacking. Such as the W212 not having a alcantara headliner, for one. The W211 seems to be better constructed

I thought about that. But there are a lot of things that I like better about the E63:
* E63 has actual paddles for the paddle shifters
* E63 front end
* E63 wheels
* E63 shift knob (small, but it is the little details like that)
There are several other little things that I really like that were updated with the E63, but I also really like the naturally aspirated power plant, and not having to worry about the supercharger and associated parts.
Trust me, I have been trying to convince myself that the E55 would be the better choice so that I could save myself a whack of cash, but the E63 is my preference.

Hey Mitch-
Wow, great story. You sound like the next poster boy for AMG !!!
I understand completely having the smile on your face when driving the car.
I felt that way 15 years ago when I got my NSX. Both cars designed with serious passion in mind !!
The E63 is one of the most ticketed cars and I can see why. MB needed to utilize the heads up technology so you can see the three digits in time before it sneaks up on you !!
No doubt I am a ticket waiting to happen here in Atlanta. Too many fast cars with drivers that want to prove at every turn they are faster !!
Maybe the V1 and the laser jammer can help, but I doubt it.,
Since you mentioned you have a kid, I would stear away from the GT2.
Remember it is referred to as the widowmaker !!
Since the wife is now driving the 63, you better not let her know about this forum because if she checks it out you will find that she will want to shortly lower the car, add long tubes, black out the grille, flat hood badge and will want to change that exhaust note to drown out the screaming kids !!!
Thanks for the story...

2nd E63
Go for it and get that 2nd E63. I currently have 2 AMG's and a V12. Automotive life has never been better.
My next E63 will be a W212 TT with P30, in about 18 months, provided I am able to restrain myself from taking a test drive until then; IMO the W211 looks so much better in and out, but I am a torque and power junkie and the TT motor is calling.
I may well just keep my 07 then, it remains my all round favorite of the stable, it just does everything right.

No reason I would sell, other than I love trading cars every 12-18 mos....lol
