CALI PEOPLE LISTEN UP...!
Went out for some lunch this Sunday with the wife. It's been 90 degrees here and Sunday was a nice 75, I couldn't wait to go on a nice, long overdue drive.
I'm driving down down a small residential street to get to Olympic and a BHPD cruiser gets on my ****. He lets me go for several blocks and then, just as expected, he lights me up.
1. I was not speeding.
2. I had my windows rolled down.
3. I had not broken any laws whatsoever.
I pull over to the side of the road and I get asked:
"License and Reg?"...."Have you done any modifications to this car?"
I sit puzzled as all hell. I have an exhaust (mild one that I would say sounds like a stock 65 with a cold), some VRP HEM's, and THAT'S IT.
He walks back to the cruiser and has a spirited conversation with his partner. He comes back to me with a ticket in hand and a preaching to follow.
He says:
"According to your record you like to go fast so I'm giving you a warning on the speed. Not sure if you're aware, but exhausts are illegal in the state of California. If I wanted to, I can ticket you for the exhaust and that's a big pain in the ***. You'd have to go fix the problem and get you car inspected from the engine all the way back to the exhaust. It would cost you a lot of money and a lot of time. But I wont do that, I'll just write you up for the window tints".
At this point I tried to argue that my cat's were still in place and showed my smog cert. He didn't care. He asked if my Eisenmann was Carb Certfied? I'm assuming that has to do with emissions and in that case I passed. Regardless, he could have ruined my life if he wrote me up for it.
In the end, I got a window tint ticket for widows he couldn't see. My favorite, I got a warning for the exhaust, and a warning for speeding. A warning for speeding. Based SOLELY on a previous driving record. When I was stopped the act of speeding was not even mentioned, I was stopped because I had a loud exhaust.
I support the PD more then others I would say. We donate, we go to events and functions, and my uncle was a Sheriff!
Anyways, if you live in Cali and your car sounds like a bit of heaven, watch out!

I feel for you in that I use to live in the bay area of cali, and would always get harassed for, no tint, exhaust, etc...
Thankfully I moved to Arizona, California, not anymore!

I'm surprised you are surprised...I've known of cali laws for years and it's the biggest reason I will never EVER move to cali. It is absurd and down right shameful to live in a place where the laws are so strict that you can barely do ANYTHING without breaking the law. Every aftermarket engine part must be carb certified, even if it has NOTHING to due with emissions....seriously? That's just sad. If I were you I'd get away from the Caliban ASAP.
Heck, I'm sure I broke the law by writing this post.

LAPD, BHPD, LA Sheriffs, SFPD, they are all the same sack of ***** losers. I can say that because I do contract work with law enforcement agencies but at the higher ranks, not the street-patroling, citizen-abusing tards. They are more likely to ticket a person in a nice car than a crappy car because they assume we will pay the entire fine rather than go the fix-it route - sadly I think they are right especially in my past ticket incidents. I want to start a movement called Boycott California but I have no free time on my hands to do so.

But emissions purposes, I don't have any problems in my AMG, and even in my old WRX which was cat-less, it passed emissions perfectly.

LOL! True but you lose about 80hp in that AZ heat where SoCal loses about 50hp. Seriously though, I would like to move back to Chicago burbs (where I currently store my collection of CA-banned assault rifles) once business out here dies down.

I see these types of threads every so often on the forums I frequent. Seems like this officer had a hard-on for you, but I have to say, as much as I get pulled over, I can't remember ever being treated poorly. Maybe it's because I'm probably a bit older than you, or maybe because I wear out the "yes sir, no sir, of course sir", but as long as I've treated the officer with respect and show a bit of humility, my experience is usually as pleasant as a traffic stop could be. Granted, I've been licensed for over 20 years, and my driving record doesn't currently have a blemish on it, so maybe that's a big part of it too.
I don't know...
My opinion is that an officer decides within the first 60 seconds of interacting with you, if you're going to get a citation or not, for a borderline offense. I always treat them as a position of authority, and it usually works out for me. Plus, I'm charming as hell....

Its the flavor of the day for the local PD's in Orange County... if they have a directive they will be pulling Subis and Evos over all day during their internal campaign. And the Referee (who you see to have your engine checked) is tougher than the cops. An employee at work recently got rolled here in the OC and was forced to see the Referee for modded exhaust and other items. He knew right away he wasnt going to win and brought the car to stock before he went there. I always worry about the GTR--- no post cats, no pre cats, straight piped and loud... and reeks of fuel- god it smells nice

Benz-O-Rama - I completely agree with you. But I don't think you understand Communifornia.
I had an encounter coming back from the track with a very nice deputy in AZ though. I was polite, and he ended up saying he pulled me over because he heard my exhaust take off. I wasn't speeding, but he just ran my s**t and came back and asked me what unit I was with and gives me back my info. He ended it with saying "well pretty much just, ya know, don't do it in front of a cop ya know?" verbatim.
I admit, I do like to hear the bellow of a NA motor, but I know my limits, and honestly speed limits are pretty much just right.

It sounds absurd for him to give you such a hard time unless your exhaust is that much louder then stock. VA has become pretty strict on their db law and I have been pulled over 4 times the past 2 years just for my exhaust alone on my 03 Cobra. But to be honest, I deserve it. Full long tubes, 3 inch x pipe with no cats in to a 3 inch cat back with 4 inch tips. You can barely hear yourself at idle. I just love the sound and smell of raw fuel dumping out of the car too much to make it legal so I jsut bite the bullet and pay the man. And the fact that I drive the car maybe twice a month. If they started impounding cars or something along those lines then I would think about putting something a little more quiet on there.

This reminds me of a ticket I got at the beach.I was in my m3 and some pos white trash guy says nice fake.once I heard that I got on it so he could hear the blower and a cop saw the whole thing as he was walking past us.
Excessive use of power
rapid acceleration
un necessary noise
Driving to endanger
wreckles driving
and a speeding ticket
That was a ****ty night

If you have that coupled with an offroad x pipe, it is pure sex, get a clip for us. I just have a catted x pipe with a magnaflow catback, HOWEVER, the mufflers fell off and straight pipes just emerged

I would get his badge #, supervisors Name/number, and his cruiser #, that would scare him off quick. I'm sure he was well aware that writing you up for speed/exhaust were nonsense, which is why he got you for tints. Sorry to hear it buddy, thats definitely a PITA and great way to ruin a Sunday.
This is why I live in San Jose, CA. it's one of the few places in Cali that the PD actually takes care of the general public and doesn't hassle you for Bull**** reasons, they have better things to do. All three of my car's have straight pipes with no cats (excluding the E55 w/primary still intact) and 15% tint all around and SJPD has never once written me a ticket for it. But again, as Benz-o-Rama stated I do treat them with respect and generally they return it.
CHP on the other hand can go F*** themselves, AAA with a badge and do nothing but harass people. I got Pulled over when my car was stock and the douche say "oh that's an STi intercooler, you have an illegal turbo in here."
