Harmonic Balancer install gone wrong

Well Awhile back , I put a thread in the engine parts for sale Here. for a Used 178MM Fluidampr. I had agreed with the Customer too exchange out his good used one for a new 182mm Fluidampr. Well quite some time passed . And I got a e-mail from him . all mad about the 178 he was going to send me . HIS tech!! said It was bad and he didn't screw up the install.?? And He is not paying for the upgrade. So I asked him to calm down and send it anyway. This is what I got back. See Attached pictures.

The bolt flange seated nicely with full contact Patch, The oem key way is 4 o’clock, but look at the 4:30 area at the bottom , see the metal pushed up

This is a better shot. The fit between the Crank snout & The OEM HB is about .00015. Kinda Loose by US Designed Motor & Fit. It is easy to feel the engagement ? Alignment of the key inserting to the keyway when installing. The Fluidampr is a Tighter fit .001 Instead of the .0015. . It installs not quite as easy , and you must feel for the key to keyway fit.

As you can see this install was about 10 Degrees off .< Really Bad .But, Notice that there is no Fretting of metal transfer from being a loose fit in the bore area. No metal roll up on the drive side as if it was a loose / improper torqued bolt. < Really Good!!

This is the way I install the new HBs. I set the OEM one to 37 – 38 degrees ATDC. Remove it , Mark the new one at 37 – 38 degrees ATDC. Feel for the key engagement. , Because of the tighter fit , it may not bottom out against the oil pump drive sprocket , during a hand install .So I use the old bolt & the 1 1/16” socket adapted to a 1/4” drive ratchet to bring it in the rest of the .310 , That way you feel it slide into place. Remove the old bolt install the new one , Tighten to the new Higher torque spec 180 Ft lbs & stretch 90 degrees .For real critcal installs I remove thw motr mount assu & Starter motor. I intall a flywheel lock , with the motor at 37 - 38 degrees ATDC. It is a pain in the A$$, and Time consuming, But I know it is correct.

If you also look I paint mark the 90 degree Stretch points
So At this point , we have to find a way to get paid for the replacement part that was damaged. It was not the owners or my fault , and the owners
(Master Tech) tech / installer needs to know that more attention needs to be paid too. I had this returned assy sold , for $450.00. But that is out the window LOL. Maybe you & your tech can trade out some labor for this mistake.

Classic case of a condition known as "key bound".
This is 100% installer error.

Good luck getting that Master Tech to own up to that one.
I've been in that finger pointing situation before.
Hope that customer finds a new Master Tech.
It's very hard to find a honest competent mechanic these days.

Happened to my car as the installer ruined my key-way on the crank. Time consuming and costly repair.

Wow...I have to agree that it is 100% an installation error. Even the pulley that fell off my car and destroyed the key looked pretty darn good compared to that.
