Oil Question for the DIYer's

Changing the oil for the first time on my 04 E55. On my 210 I usually extract the oil because the drain plug is in horizontally and makes a mess. Plus you don't have to take the covers down.

Now, because my oil extractor is in NC, I'm going to do it the old fashion way this time. Researched it and found out theres 2 drain plugs because there's 2 sumps ? Got the 2 plugs and washers for this time.

Now, my question is, because there's 2 sumps can the oil be extracted thru the dipstick tube like my 210. Just wondering if anyone has extracted it and gotten it all out. I'm concerned about extracting it and not getting it all out of the other sump. Supposedly the front sump holds 1.5 quarts.

Thansk guys.

Do a search. This topic hs been discussed many times. Quick answer - it's a fail to use an top extractor because it leaves nearly a quart of oil in the front sump.

Kimp55 is right, it does leave some oil(probably a bit less than a quart) in the front sump. However, I know that dealers still use an extractor(right or not), and I have used one the last 3 oil changes since I lost the use of my lift. Even when the drain plugs are removed there is still some residual oil left in the engine(oil cooler/linesr, lifters, clinging to parts), though it's probably less than a quart. Sooooo, it's really up to you.

Thanks guys. I drained it thru the plugs.
