Surprised noone is experimenting with the 7 speeds on the 55

I know I know, "the 7 speed can't handle the torque". Then again last year we were saying, "You can't put the V12 in the 55 and make it work without stand alone ecu." Enter Jodi. It's just that those hyped up C63s are running some serious torque seemingly without major problems.

Just imagine our torque monsters blazing down the track with the shift speeds of the 7 spdr.

Sometimes I wonder if we are throwing away literally 3/4 of a sec or MORE of 1/4 mile times with our slushers. That's literally the differnce between 11.1 and 10.6s. Upper 10s to lower 10s.

My major balling/modding days are over temporarily but always nice to put it out there for the Brookes and Jodis of the world that are still in full modding mode.

Just curious if anyone has even thought about beefing up the 7spd and dropping it in. If Jodi can make the V12 happen......ANYTHING is possible.

Here is the closest anyone has gotten. Guy put the 7 speed in the 55 but couldn't get TCU to work.

LISTEN TO THOSE SHIFTS GUYS

It's a good question. You would have to plot the ratios available and look at the gear spacing.

I would think that with the massive flat torque of the 55K the extra gears would be superfluous. Sure, the faster shifts would save time but making the extra 1 or 2 shifts to get through the 1/4 mile might negate any advantage.

I suspect that when you do the math, the only advantage afforded by the 7-speed would be better fuel econcomy. Figuring that the cost of a conversion would buy LOTS of fuel, it starts to look like a tough sell...

Yeah, what gear would the 7 speed be in finishing at 120-130mph? The E55 only makes 2 shifts which while being a little slow may still be better/the same. It having to make 3 shifts (or maybe 4?) with the 7 speed would not be faster when accounting for the extra shifts negating the slightly quicker shifts. And then account for a TCU tune or valve body upgrade and you could turn out being slower with the 7 speed.

Better fuel mileage sure would be nice though.

I've heard bad things about the 7 speed trannys going bad fast. The 5 speeds can handle way more torque. 7 speed would be nice though.

Here ya go...

E55 speed in gear
1st 47mph
2nd 80
3rd 124
4th 155*
5th 155*

E63 (W211 wagon)
1st 40mph
2nd 63
3rd 94
4th 131
5th 155*
6th 155*
7th 155*

Both cars have same final drive ratio of 2.65:1. Not sure about the actual difference in shift speeds of the two transmissions though.

I think Im the only one that wants longer first and second gearing. Here is me today in 65 dry weather on pilot super sports doing a second gear pull getting on the highway.

I want first to hit 65 and second to hit 100mph lol

I agree with urbam, in that, I do not feel we would be any quicker in the 1/4. We have such a broad torque band which works quite well with our gearing.

Wasn't there a gentleman who installed a 5.4k into a CLS500, and mated it to the 7 speed?

Yea but he said in one post i believe the tranny would only last 2 years driving it hard and sooner or later he was going to change it out to a 5 speed

But the new s63 v8 twin turbo uses the 7 speed & it makes 800nm & 900nm with the factory upgrade flash!

So why will the new 7 speed like in the s63 not handle the e55 torque ?

That looks pretty much right...A 7 speed with 2 overdrive gears...waste...I really wish they'd tightened the higher gears down a little more...

S63TT and CL63TT with Performance package are 1000NM and 2012 Brabus CLS V12TT Rocket 800hp 1200NM having the new MCT 7 speed gear.

so it can handle upto 1200NM for now.

Why? In a race, after 5th you really don't need 6th and 7th unless you plan on going 200+mph. The first 5 ratios are short enough to cause massive wheel spin...I love it...lol.
