WTB: 211 AMG Spare Tire

My recently acquired E55 wagon has the 3rd row folding seat option, hence did not come with the collapsable spare tire. I would like the purchase one. It is the same part number used in the E55 sedans from '04-ish onwards - 211 400 31 95. I think the SL55 used the same spare as well.

Please PM or email if you have one or can point me toward a source.

Thx, - Shadow

Hey, get your own thread!

Seriously - think this one might work? I don't recognize the part number, but it's supposedly out of an SL55, which uses the same spare as the E55. The tire & wheel size are correct for an E55.

No, an E500 spare won't work. You need an 18" wheel to fit over the front brakes on an E55.

I have the spare from my 05 E55. Not using it since i bought a full size 18 as a spare. Only issue is that the vrderstein tire that is on the spare is shredded. I can sell the rim itself. I know MB wanted $600 to repair it. I was hell no, i'll buy a closeout 18in rim from tirerack and addded Con DWS tire for it

That's crazy pricing from the MB dealer. I have quotes for a brand new assembly - wheel + tire - at around $500.

I'm guessing the full size rime doesn't fit in the spare tire well. Do you just take up trunk space with it?

I just had my parts mgr look up the wheel & tire for me.

Retail $994

Dealer Cost $650

I have a brand new one with the inflator. How much do you want to pay me for it? The one on EBay is an auction, not a buy-it-now. It's currently at $200 shipped.

It sits in the well snug but is 1nch higher so the top covering isn't flush. I can live w that knowing I have full sized spare

I think you may need to have a chat with your dealer. Parts.com has it - MB part number 211 400 31 95 - for $523.

I'm waiting to see where the ebay auction lands, haven't had much luck at finding out what previous deals went for. I'm thinking not more than $250 including shipping, otherwise I'll just order brand new online, or do as below...

Very nice. I had assumed the wheel was too large in diameter to fit the tub, hence the collapsable spare. I will have to go measure out the size of the well in the my wagon before going too far down this inflatable spare road...

I have one in the wagon enroute to me, which it to say: I don't actually "have" it yet.

The PO indeed paid well over $600 for it a few years back

For both my e's, i went to Tirerack and looked at their closeout rims. I picked up a oz botecelli 18 , $149 w/cont dws 149 and E500, 19in ava rim, $99 w/hankook $170. Cant beat those prices vs MB OEM spare.

If you were local, i'd sell the rim for $100

Thanks for the input. I am going to measure out the tub in the back of the wagon and see if I can't source a full size spare.

It is strange that MB eliminated the spare only on E55 wagons, and then only those that have the 3rd row seat. All other wagon have a spare - even if they have the 3rd row seat and sport package w/18" wheels. Overall tire diameter on the base wagon wit 225/55/16 tires is actually larger than the AMG sizes. Only thing I can think of is the AMG brakes require an 18" wheel, while other cars can utilize a 16 or 17 inch spare wheel regardless of the size of the normal road wheels.

Yeah, speaking of which, you've gone awfully silent over in our AMG wagon thread! We're all waiting for you to spill the beans. Shoot, I even got pictures posted of the new car now...

I haven't looked yet, but I would bet MB eliminated the jack and lug wrench along with the spare, so make sure you have the tools to install the spare. Your car should already have an air compressor along with the tire sealant. In a way, it's nice to have both because you can repair a tire that picks up a screw or nail, and also survive a shredded tire that is not repairable. (I'm in the telecom business - we think in terms of multiple layers of redundancies.)

The prices i listed are actual dealer cost & suggested retail for Canada.

I didn't pull them out of thin air. I work at a Benz dealership.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't intend my response to be insulting, just dashed it off a bit quickly. I think everyone else in this thread is talking US pricing, so there lies the disparity. MB still seems to charge a premium in Canada, and then there's the whole GST thing...

Anyways, your dealer cost in Canada looks to be 25% above the best street price in the US.

Following up. A full size wheel/tire will fit in the spare tire well of an E55 wagon. Here is my car with a front 18x8 wheel shod with 245/40/18 Pilot Super Sport. It drops right into the well. I unbolted and removed the swinging "floor" where the passengers in the 3rd row seat would place their feet. This is necessary to get the tire into the well.

There's enough room to drop the backrest of the 3rd row seat completely closed...

However, the section with the 3rd row seat bottom cushion won't quite close. It sits about an inch too high. Obviously this won't do in a wagon. I'm looking at two possible solutions to this issue: either unmount the seat bottom cushion from the wooden panel (easy on previous wagons, not obvious on the 211...) or source a slightly narrower tire. Looking at the tirerack website, I see that a 215/45/18 has the correct diameter (right in between the front and rear tire diameter of an E55) and is 1-1.5 inches narrower than a 245. Need to check the load rating, but we may have winner here folks...

Following up, I decided to go with the full size spare, as suggested by novae500. I ordered a 245/40/18 Kuhmo Ecsta 4x mounted on a closeout MSW wheel from Tirerack. Under $300 including shipping, so about the same price as the inflatable spares on the used market.

Considered ordering up a replica AMG wheel (about $150 delivered) and having it shod locally. But decided it wasn't worth the additional hassle and dollars.

With the 3rd seat bottom cushion removed, there is plenty of room to store a 245 tire with the load floor completely flat. I've not tested if the rear 265 section tire fits as well, but I think there is also enough headroom to completely close the load floor with it in place. The tire well must be deeper in the wagon than the sedan.

Oh, and the car does include a jack, lug wrench, etc. So we now have a full mobility spare tire in the E55. No 50MPH speed or short distance limits imposed - I like that.
