I would bet the brake booster would have something to say about going from the ML55 stock 2 piston in addition to completely throwing off brake bias

I couldn't remember if they were 2 or 4(it's probably been 2.5-3 years since I did a brake job on my old truck)... In any case, installing them yes, doable, but you may need to swap the brake booster and figure out a way to adjust the brake bias

thanks for this data...I'm at the beginning stages of looking into doing this mod and a possible AMG blower

Whatever you do, DON'T lower it unless you have a set of torsion bars made for the front

suspension will stay 100% stock

with the weight of this thing it needs larger brakes if you drive with any speed

When I was running oem pads and rotors I would eat through them... Every 15k miles. I moved to a set of porter field RS4s and Zimmerman drilled rotors, changed up the fluid to superblue ATE, and got rid of the truck before doing a set of SS lines... The pedal was def very gummy before a flush and what not. I drove my truck to the limits for years before handing it down to my mom.

What are you using for brake compound? I found the performance GREATLY increased as soon as I moved away from the oem components

You miss the old whale huh? It accelerates like a freight truck but try stopping it.

Can anyone shed any light on this project, or what it would take to retrofit them?

Your ML55 front rotor (00-03) is 345x32 which is similar to C32 AMG (02-04) that we already made it available (save 7 lbs per rotor). Same rotor also used for ML500 (02-05) and ML430 (00-01).

It appears stock replacement would be a more straight forward and cost effective upgrade. As most utility truck (not just MB) is heavy and the brake tends to under-perform. That's why for 08+ ML55 the rotor has enlarged to 390x36, but if you upgrade to our light weight two piece, plus a good pad it should stop as well if not better than the new models with monstrous rotors.

If there is enough interest, we will tool it up and make two piece rotor available.

Thanks

There was no ML55 past 2002. Did you mean ML63?

Was it produced in 2003 or where they produced in 2002 sold as 2003's? Have never seen a 2003 ML55. Good to know they exist.

My be I am wrong but I was referring to this drop down list in searching for different year's (00-08) brakes.

ML55 AMG (W163), ML63 AMG (W164)

this is good news, I got your email too. Im still trying to find out what I have to do to mount up the larger calipers before I take that route.

Looks like I have to take this project on by myself, nothing new With the Brembo BBK kit they use a caliper mounting bracket similar to this, If I have to get these fabricated i will, I use CAD/CAM in my biz. Either way this project will be much cheaper then Brembos $4k+ Im destined to make this work.
