Power trunk closer - So I went close my trunk and heard a sound that sounded like a snap and it was stiff and hard to close. Now when I pop it, it only opens a couple of inches and I have to be firm to open it by hand. Once open, pushing the close button, the electronic closer will close it half way, pushing the close again and it closes all the way. It seems the trunk motor is working, but whatever happend made it really stiff.
I'm going to take the lining out tomorrow and take a look but wondered if you guys had seen this.

So I took the trunk apart ( at lots of pictures I'll post later) didn't find any frayed wires but did find a plastic elbow had popped off, this thing looks extremely flimsy, anyone know if there is an upgraded part?

I also watched the left hand assembly While moving the trunk up and down and the whole thing wobbles and flexes more than I'd expect.

Help on that plastic thing would be appreciated as I'm sure it will pop off again and after removing 3,545 clips that hold he carpet in , I'd like to do it once :-)

So update on this, the trunk appears to open as far as it can go, and often won't close automatically, I have to help it by moving it a couple of inches. Is here a way to set the trunk 'open height' ?

Not found any solution to fixing the plastic arm that would pop-off, I'll start putting it back together tomorrow, unless someone has ideas.

try reading the above link.
i think you should check the wires that run down along the left trunk arm. I had trunk problems with my car when i first purchased. when looking for cut wires look carefully, they will be wrapped up in some black looking tape unwrap tape and look close. good luck. also are you sure you put the white plastic think back in the correct position. Mine popped off once and i had to make sure i had it in the correct spot when putting back together. good luck.
also have you searched the forum for "trunk closing" or "trunk shutting"
also try holding down or up the trunk button on the drivers door for 5 seconds. this may help....i saw a post on this suggestion

I'm concerned it will pop off again.

I always get on my girlfriend to press the button, and not to close the trunk by hand. As this can be an expensive repair.

Hi all,
I know this thread is old, but... I had a dead battery and had to open the trunk to jump start. Used the physical key to open it. It would not go up all the way. I lifted it manually. I tried closing it manually and it was impossible - I didn’t want to force and break anything. My question is how to close it manually without breaking stuff? What if I needed to take something out of trunk while battery was dead

ARE you saying that it would be OK to pull it down hard to close manually? I applied some force and it felt like I could break did more. Unlike my 2013 E class where motor would only close the trunk, the E63’s trunk is opened and closed by the motor. But there should be a way to manually close the trunk

In the summer (warm) I'm not too worried about someone closing the trunk by hand, but I do point out the button under the trunk lid that does the work for them. In the winter (cold) I make sure that it only gets closed with the button, because I've read stories on this forum where linkage gets broken, gears get stripped, and any manner of other (bad) things happen to the automatic closer system. If I HAVE to close it by hand, winter or summer, it is with gentle but firm coaxing instead of brute force to make sure the clutch has a chance to slip.
