This is correct. The Hammer was purely an AMG product long before Mercedes even thought of acquiring them. The term "Hammer" was actually coined by an American journalist who wrote for Car and Driver back in 1986 and the name stuck. All Hammer cars were based on the W124 chassis and had varying engines from twin cam 5.4L to twin cam 6.0L and some mix and match block \ head combos...there were a few W124 Hammer Wagons also built. I luckily still have alot of the AMG literature from this era and should scan it and share it (giving away my age here...laughing!).
I should snap some pictures of old AMG parts... Their headers look like something I could/would build! All hand welded, with some butt-ugly welds - but hey, it worked! In their early days, they would cut springs in order to lower the car and obtain the lower center of gravity. Once again crude, but it worked.
Showing your age?! Thats a cool thing, means you have some cool stories to bring to the table!
