Some old-school AMG E-Class goodness...

A bit OT - but I know a few of the people that hang out here will appreciate these pictures of the older brother to our beloved W211 AMGs...

Here are some pictures of a friends W124 E-Class AMG:

Seems only 30 of the hammers were built, and one wagon.

Not as old as the Hammer but this was my first AMG sporting the ever so popular back then Lorinser rear spoiler.

You have to admit BBS LM's were great back then and are still great today!!!

Great looking W124 but what posessed him to put clear tail lights on it?

I believe they were originally smoked tail lights, but age/exposure to the sun bleached them to their clear finish.

Thats a good looker!

LMs look perfect on the W210.

If you don't mind me asking, why was/is the Lorinser spoiler so popular?

Way back then--- that was a 2001 new- Loriniser was at the top of their game and well revered in the aftermarket tuning MBZ environment aesthetically speaking. The mini shopping cart handle spoiler had its appeal and like most fads it faded out. Lorinser is still around but I dont like their stuff- too gawdy and forward.

Some still like Lorinser- I used to like some of their wheels but their body kits scared me.

All of the E500 Hammers were built in Zuffenhausen by Porsche. How may of you knew that?

I had an 86 260E that my Aunt originally bought back in 1990... Then my step dad took it off her hands, then I took it off my stepdad's hands, which then went to a friend of my step dad... and then went to another friend...

When I got rid of that car it had over 400k miles on it... They DEF dont build em like they used to

The 500E was a Benz/Porsche build, but not a "Hammer" as "hammer" was an AMG term and the 500E had zero to do with AMG. This was supposed to be Mercedes factory answer to the Hammer.

none
E500/500E used the SL500 production motor so this was not a AMG Car. Besides production was before AMG was bought outright by MB in 1998, three years after production of the E500/500E stopped.

However AMG did make a E60 of the same platform

This is correct. The Hammer was purely an AMG product long before Mercedes even thought of acquiring them. The term "Hammer" was actually coined by an American journalist who wrote for Car and Driver back in 1986 and the name stuck. All Hammer cars were based on the W124 chassis and had varying engines from twin cam 5.4L to twin cam 6.0L and some mix and match block \ head combos...there were a few W124 Hammer Wagons also built. I luckily still have alot of the AMG literature from this era and should scan it and share it (giving away my age here...laughing!).

Found some more pictures of my friends' old AMGs:

Sorry they aren't pictures of E-Class AMGs. The Hammer had a pretty positive welcome, and am hoping these do too....

The guy that owns the AMG Hammer from above also owns the black W126 AMG coupe. Its an early M117 5 liter V8 with AMG solid lifters - it loves to rev! The car makes a fantastic noise at WOT as it passes the stock redline the M117 was built for.

He is trying to close the deal on another tuned W124 today... I will post some pictures of it later today, after he signs the papers and closes the deal.

I would love a amg 126 coupe. I used to work with someone that worked with amg when they were near Chicago back in the day. He had some stories He said that they built a "hammer" version of a 201 for a customer who later died in the car hitting a off ramp too fast or something like that
