Heat Exchanger & Pump data

I would like to compile data on different HE & pump setups. Could folks post their mods and data, so I can compile into a single thread ? (Feel free to send me PMs. )

I am wondering why the H/E coolant is NOT dedicated from the factory (as it would seem to be ~180 degrees once the engine is warm) - like the ZR1 for example . I was thinking that just using the stock H/E and a dedicated reservoir would help immensely and be relatively cheap. I cannot understand why folks would just replace the front h/e and pump, but still keep the system combined with the engine coolant.

For those of you that have already been down this path, would you please share your data, experience, and advice ? Thanks

I'm not 100% sure that our stock system is not "split". Yes, they both fill from the same resevior area, but I think it is partitioned off, at least that is what I seemed to have seen....

One of the single best mods you can do for your car is to split the system. You can split the system two different ways. Take a min or two and search through some of the older threads and post and you will find more info

I bet the guys who race here a lot can offer some excellent data... there's a reason they picked their setups

I'd like to see 3 recommendations:

1. OEM upgrade (i.e. CM30, or Bosch 010)
2. performance upgrade - (pump + upgraded H/E)
3. race upgrade options + pheno, meth, remote tank, etc...

It all depends on your level of mods. If you do not have any plans to mod then at the very least you should split the system and run the BMW power steering resevoir up front in the engine compartment. (search BMW resevoir)
If you plan to race then you may want to consider a rear resevoir & or meth injection or killer chiller (search killer chiller). Some people are running pulley/tune, heat exchanger & updated intercooler pump and are just fine.

This would be me. So far no issues with several back to back runs.

I have yet to see any data that actually impresses me. Is it better? Yes...but it's not a big deal.

I never had any problems while at the track making back to back to back to back runs with my stock setup so it will be interesting when I get this thing back on the track with a split system

Well I have the meizer going in this week. I have a EC HE, split system and likely a failing stock pump. Just used the Torque app and it said high of 118 deg and after 2-3 min of cruising around 60 still read 96 deg.

New pump and some water wetter going in this week. So I will check again after this install. So not exactly what you want since the stock pump seems to be dying.

Thanks folks for all of your posts. Could you be a bit more specific on how you have split your systems (BMW reservoir, custom tank, etc.) and what intake temps you are seeing after several "spirited runs" (on the track of course) ? Thanks
