Do you think possible fuel pump leak issue.
But seriously now

Parking the car inside of a garage with this issue of gas fume permeating the garage and possible adjoining house any spark along with the proper air fuel concentration would be devastating, also using an electric garage opener would not be the best idea. Flicking on the garage light inside of the garage would also be enough to level the garage with strong fume. Gas is not explosive but the fumes are.

Hi all first post and currently suffering with this issue on my 2005 E55, 55,800 miles,,, already opened a complaint with the NHTSA,,, I suspect this issue is in large part heat related cuz its definitely worse on hot days and/or when sitting in traffic,,, I first noticed the gas smell by the passenger rear wheelhouse (where the purge valve is) and noticed my senders where dry, this last time when I noticed the smell it was not localized to the rear wheelhouse kinda general and all over, when I check the senders, noticed the drivers side sender had gas puddled exactly like some of the pics in this forum,,, I have an older house and my central AC unit is in the garage and isnt perfectly sealed so in about an hour the whole house smelled like gas and I needed to open the windows to vent, WTF!!
what is probably happening is ensuing pressure/temps are greater than the tolerances used to calculate required seals, purge valves, etc. hence the reason folks see the problem recurring even after various repairs have been done,,,
I also suspect MB has a fix and will not step up,,, this cant be that hard for them to fix, I could probably give a car to the mechanical engineering department of a decent university and they would have a fix in a semester,,, shameful really when you drop the kind of $$ AMG products command, plus the $$ to feed them,,,

I wonder if this issue can be temporarily fixed by simply filling the tank to 3/4 full? That way there isn't enough gas to overfill it so it doesn't ultimately leak to the bottom of the rear seats?

When the "low fuel warning" light comes on......refill your tank with EXACTLY 10 gallons of fuel.
That will bring you reliably to 3/4 tank.
I've been using this trick for the last 15 months since my fuel leak was first detected and haven't smelled fumes at all since.
It's a lousy solution, but it works for now while we all wait to see what NHTSA can do for us.

IIRC the E55 is around 21 - 22 gallons total. Not sure what the CLS is.....

I'm pretty sure the CLS55 gets the same amount. So no more than 10 gallons after the "low gas" sign appears? If 10 gallons + reserve fuel will get us to 3/4 full, that means when reserve fuel sign appears, you generally have around 5 gallons left?

Depends what you mean by "fix"......
There is a DIY that shows how to take everything apart and replace the defective parts with new (but equally crappy) parts. Mercedes continues to deny any material defects in the parts, and has never provided a new part that actually solves the issue.
The best best IMHO is to replace the leaking senders, and o-rings... and then flood the exposed areas with epoxy (DIY for this is also available here somewhere) to prevent the hairline cracks from starting in the first place.
That combination of items is about the best you are going to do, unless you are willing to disconnect the factory system completely and run a fuel cell in the trunk!

So after reading this little gem of an article, I wonder if this is part of the reason why MB is dragging it's feet with this issue.

Whomever wrote that article should check their math.
The return rate of .41 doesn't not mean 41 out of every 100 cars. I'm sure it it supposed to be .41%. (Less than 1 car per hundred sold)
Hyundai recall rate was described as 1.15.... "115 cars recalled for every 100 sold". yeah, sure. They recalled ALL of their own cars, and also recalled 15 from other manufacturers just to be safe....
